Maya Rudolph, star of "Up All Night," actually knows what it means to work into the wee hours -- she was a "Saturday Night Live" player from 2000-07. It was not easy, but surprisingly, that job offered her a unique look at TODAY.
"Every Tuesday night that we were writing. ... My office overlooked here on 49th (Street), and I would hear the people coming into the TODAY show and cheering, and I was trying to think of funny things and the dawn was breaking. ... You could smell people's shampoo in their hair as you were leaving the building ... and you'd been up all night," she told TODAY's Savannah Guthrie Wednesday.
Still, she said "SNL" was the "greatest place on earth," and that "it prepares you for anything. And not just work but really, truly, life."?
That includes "Up All Night," in which she co-stars with Christina Applegate and Will Arnett. In the new season, her character Ava -- who has just lost her talk show -- has another run-in with TODAY -- this time in the form of a botched audition. And while Rudolph can literally be up all night if she has to, she doesn't think her character could hack morning television.
"I do not think (she is) employed at the TODAY show," she said. "I don't think Ava would like getting up early."
"Up All Night" returns to NBC Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
