Demi Lovato Opens Up About Bipolar Disorder

'I felt relieved when I found out,' 'X Factor' judge tells Cosmopolitan in July issue.

Demi Lovato is opening up about her bipolar disorder in the July issue of Cosmopolitan, telling the magazine that being diagnosed was a relief because it meant she could treat the problem.

"I felt relieved when I found out. Like I'm not completely crazy; there's a medical reason for all of it," Lovato says in the July issue. "It's a daily thing; you don't get time off from it. And if I feel myself slipping back into old patterns, I have to ask others for help, which is hard for me to learn, because I really like doing everything on my own."

The new "X Factor" judge revealed earlier this year in her MTV documentary that her issues manifested themselves in self-harm, including an eating disorder and self-medicating that resulted in a stay at the Timberline Knolls treatment facility in Illinois.

"I had so many issues that were underneath, that needed to be taken care of, and we kept putting Band-Aids over it. It literally drove me insane. I was not eating, and purging, and self-harming. It was really difficult to be able to stop," Lovato recalled to MTV. "This is a daily battle that I will face for the rest of my life. Everyone kind of made me a role model, and I hated that. I was partying, I was self-medicating. I was always stressing out. I felt like I was living a lie. I felt guilt and shame. I decided to take it out on myself. I harmed myself. It was my way of taking my own shame and my own guilt out on myself, and I was just depressed."

Having gotten the help she needed and with her new high-profile gig on "The X Factor" opposite Britney Spears, the pop star is back on the right path now, and she tells Cosmopolitan that she sees herself with a family in the not-too-distant future. "I want to be married with kids in 10 years," Lovato revealed.

The 19-year-old singer/actress' past struggles have given her a new perspective on dating as well, teaching her that she should not rush to judgment when it comes to guys — with the exception of one characteristic that she simply will not abide.

"I don't have many deal breakers. I've done so much in my life, it doesn't feel right to judge other people," Lovato tells the mag. "Oh, I know one quality I won't tolerate. I would never be with a guy who is controlling."

Movie Review: Men in Black III in 3D at the Village Theater ...

They are back... in time!

The plot follows Agent J (Will Smith) as he travels back in time to kill an alien before that alien can kill his partner Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones). It is action packed, humorous and overall an entertaining movie. Bonus; it is in 3D! For the Jones fans, don?t be surprised if you do not get your fill of him in this movie. Most of the time you see Agent K?s younger self played by Josh Brolin. However, for the Smith fans you will be pleased!

I must admit, I am not a fan of sci-fi alien movies. But this was good! Although the beginning is a bit of a struggle for those who do not appreciate the skilled special effects and disgusting alien guts splattering on the walls, the plot and ending are well worth the gross parts. There is much more to the story line than defeating aliens and the characters come full circle in a funny, surprising, and heartwarming way.

Fellow movie-goer Kristine Weweraka said about the movie, "I haven't seen all the MIB movies but it was easy to follow the plot. I liked it because it was a mix of alien sci-fi and comedy."

Lee family scraps over some of Samsung riches

SEOUL (Reuters) - Lawyers for Lee Kun-hee said on Wednesday the chairman of Samsung Electronics had been chosen by his father, the Samsung Group's founder, to lead the conglomerate and so was free to transfer shares of group companies to maintain control.

Lee, South Korea's richest man, is defending three lawsuits from relatives who claim around $1 billion of Samsung assets they say Lee inherited and hid in nominee accounts.

There's little chance Lee will lose control of Samsung, one of South Korea's chaebol - the sprawling family-owned industrial groups that wield huge economic and political clout - but the public spat over a small part of the Samsung fortune may dent his plans for a smooth handover to his only son, Jay Lee.

In opening remarks before a packed Seoul Central District Court, Lee's lawyers argued that the group's founder, Lee Byung-chull, made it clear before he died in 1987 that Lee would inherit his shares in Samsung Electronics and Samsung Life, an insurance company at the heart of a web of group cross-shareholdings.

"The Samsung founder had said clearly he will have Lee Kun-hee take over from him to lead the group ... and that naturally includes his will to transfer shares (of key Samsung companies) to the defendant to ensure his management control," Yun Jae-yun, a former judge representing Lee, told the court.

Lawyers for Lee's elder brother, Maeng-hee, who is in his 80s, a sister and another relative said they did not know until last year about $3.8 billion of assets that Lee inherited.

The lawyers, from Yoon and Yang, said Samsung's founder had never said that any plan for Lee to assume control of the group included inheriting all his father's assets. "The plaintiffs had not been aware of the existence of such assets held in nominee accounts, and these should be distributed to those entitled to the inheritance," they said.

KEEPING CONTROL

In recent weeks Maeng-hee called his younger septuagenarian brother "greedy" and "childish". Kun-hee has said Maeng-hee was turfed out of the family and not judged fit to lead Samsung, which was founded in 1938 and has grown into the world's largest smartphone, TV and memory chip maker.

Samsung on Tuesday launched its latest Galaxy S III smartphone into an expectant market. Samsung sold 44.5 million smartphones in January-March - equal to nearly 21,000 every hour - giving it 30.6 percent market share, well ahead of Apple Inc's rival iPhone.

The hearing, which will resume on June 27, may shed more light on how the Lee family maintains its grip on the phones-to-ships group, some details of which emerged in a 2008 lawsuit when Kun-hee was found guilty of financial wrongdoing and tax evasion. He was later pardoned by South Korea's president.

"It's generally not in one's favor to bet against the House of Samsung and the chairman for domestic legal issues - where such influence often transcends economic borders into legal ones," Jasper Kim, a professor of international business law and finance at Ewha University's graduate school, said before Wednesday's hearing.

EVER EVERLAND

The Samsung Group is effectively controlled by Samsung Everland, a small zoo and theme park company with equity capital of just $10.7 million. If Kun-hee's stake in Samsung Life - he is the biggest shareholder with 20.76 percent - falls below Everland's 19.34 percent, Everland would, under South Korean law, be forced to sell stakes in non-financial companies, including Samsung Electronics.

Maeng-hee and the other plaintiffs are seeking a quarter of Kun-hee's stake in Samsung Life.

In the run-up to the hearing, Hyundai Securities analyst Jun Yong-ki predicted Lee would prefer to settle in cash because losing some of his stake in Samsung Life could spark a bigger ownership restructuring across the group.

Samsung has declined to comment as the litigation is a personal, civil case.

FAMILY FRICTION

Lee Maeng-hee was chosen to lead Samsung in 1967 when his father retired, but his aggressive management style caused friction with the founder's confidants, according to several books about Samsung. Ties were finally severed after a coup by the founder's second son, Chang-hee, who told the presidential office his father had a $1 million slush fund overseas.

Lee Byung-chull believed his eldest son was also involved in the plot to discredit him. He exiled Chang-hee to the United States, and returned as chairman himself. In 1976, when diagnosed with cancer, he decided Kun-hee should take over the business. Chang-hee died in 1991.

In a recent book on Maeng-hee, "Prince Sado of Samsung", Lee Yong-u, no relation, wrote that Maeng-hee failed in his succession bid due to a conspiracy by the founder's inner circle, which included Kun-hee's father-in-law.

PUBLIC ANGER

As and when Jay Lee takes over, there is likely to be closer public scrutiny amid growing anger over chaebols' dominance in an economy where wealth gaps are widening.

"It's not clear whether the share transfer scheme to Jay Lee will be clawed back by the courts at this point, from a legal purview," said Ewha's Kim.

Jay Lee, 43, has yet to make any significant mark on the business, beyond a failed e-commerce venture during the dotcom bubble. Critics say he lacks his father's charisma, business insight and entrepreneurship. The snappily dressed and bespectacled Lee has a degree in East Asian history from Seoul National University, an MBA from Keio University in Japan and also attended the doctoral program at Harvard Business School. He has two children and went through one of Korea's highest profile divorce cases.

The Lee family has been criticized by activist shareholders over its obscure share dealings and, longer term, there is a risk that a focus on keeping it in the family may damage the group.

"The current Samsung Group transfer of power dynamics resembles the Roman Empire at or near its peak," said Ewha's Kim.

Nikon D800

At 36 megapixels the Nikon D800 ($2,999.95 list, body only) is not only the company's highest-resolution camera?it's the highest-resolution camera you can find anywhere without moving up to digital medium format. Event photographers will appreciate the fast, accurate autofocus, excellent performance at ISO 6400, and compatibility with Nikon's Speedlight flash system. It doesn't quite manage to oust its more-expensive sibling, the Nikon D4 ($5,995.95, 4.5 stars) as our Editors' Choice for full frame D-SLRs, but is a very capable camera in its own right.

Design and Features
Unlike the D4, the D800 doesn't have an integrated vertical grip?although there is one available as an optional add-on. This makes the camera a bit smaller, putting it in the same ballpark as the Canon EOS 5D Mark III ($3,499, 4 stars). The D800 measures 4.8 by 5.7 by 3.2 inches (HWD) and weighs just under 2 pounds. The 5D Mark III is 4.6 by 6.0 by 3.0 inches and is only slightly heavier, although that camera doesn't include a pop-up flash, something that isn't usually found on pro cameras, but is included in the D800. And, as a full-frame camera, all of your Nikkor lenses will retain the same field of view that they do on a 35mm film body.

As you'd expect with a camera this advanced, the D800's body is rife with physical controls. There are buttons and switches to control ISO, White Balance, Exposure Bracketing, Autofocus, Metering, and other common functions. If there's a setting that you need during a shoot, chances are you won't have to dive into a menu to adjust it. You can monitor shooting settings in the large, bright viewfinder?it provides 100 percent coverage, an improvement over the 95 percent finder found in the $2,700 Nikon D700 ?adjusting them via either the camera's two control dials.

The rear LCD is 3.2 inches and features a 921k-dot resolution. It isn't quite as good as the display found on the rear of the Canon 5D Mark III, but is still sharp enough to allow you to confirm critical focus when reviewing shots. The D800 supports Live View during still recording?and requires it when recording video?but the display is fixed, so you'll have to stay behind the camera when using these functions. The articulating display on the Sony Alpha 77 ($1,999.99, 4.5 stars), a camera with a smaller APS-C image sensor, is more useful for Live View use?and that camera can focus faster when using the rear LCD thanks to a fixed-mirror design that allows it to use Phase Detect AF at all times.

Greek experts find Roman wrecks nearly a mile deep

Broken ancient pottery from the wreck of a 3rd century AD Roman-era ship found 1.2 kilometers deep off the western coast of Greece is seen in this undated photo issued by Greek Culture Ministry on Tuesday, May 29, 2012. Greece's culture ministry says an undersea survey ahead of the sinking of a Greek-Italian gas pipe has discovered the deepest-known shipwrecks in the Mediterranean. (AP) ? Two Roman-era shipwrecks have been found in deep water off a western Greek island, challenging the conventional theory that ancient shipmasters stuck to coastal routes rather than risking the open sea, an official said Tuesday.

Greece's culture ministry said the two third-century wrecks were discovered earlier this month during a survey of an area where a Greek-Italian gas pipeline is to be sunk. They lay between 1.2 and 1.4 kilometers (0.7-0.9 miles) deep in the sea between Corfu and Italy.

That would place them among the deepest known ancient wrecks in the Mediterranean, apart from remains found in 1999 of an older vessel some 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) deep off Cyprus.

Angeliki Simossi, head of Greece's underwater antiquities department, said sunken ancient ships are generally found 30-40 meters (100-130 feet) deep.

Most scholars believe that ancient traders were unwilling to veer far offshore, unlike warships which were unburdened by ballast and cargo.

"There are many Roman shipwrecks, but these are in deep waters. They were not sailing close to the coast," Simossi said.

"The conventional theory was that, as these were small vessels up to 25 meters (80 feet) long, they did not have the capacity to navigate far from the coast, so that if there was a wreck they would be close enough to the coast to save the crew," she said.

U.S. archaeologist Brendan Foley, who was not involved in the project, said a series of ancient wrecks located far from land over the past 15 years has forced experts to reconsider the coast-hugging theory.

"The Ministry of Culture's latest discoveries are crucial hard data showing the actual patterns of ancient seafaring and commerce," said Foley, a deep water archaeology expert at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts.

Jeffrey Royal, director of the Key West, Florida, based RPM Nautical Foundation, said that in many cases ? as when winds threatened to push ships onto rocks ? ancient mariners made a conscious effort to avoid coastal waters.

Royal, whose foundation has carried out a series of Mediterranean underwater projects, said the depth of such finds is immaterial from an archaeological standpoint.

"In antiquity ships didn't sail around with depth finders and keep track of how deep they were," he said. "It was more how far they were on the surface in relation to land. After 30 meters of depth the boat's safe, so if it's 30 meters (100 feet) or 3,000 meters it's a little irrelevant."

The remains were located during an investigation that covered 200 square kilometers (77 square miles) of seabed off the islands of Corfu and Paxoi.

A Greek oceanographic vessel using side-scan radar and robot submarines took footage of scattered cargo ? storage jars, or amphorae, used to carry foodstuffs and wine ? cooking utensils for the crew, anchors, ballast stones and what could be remains of the wooden ships.

The team also raised samples of pottery and a marble vase.

The one ship was carrying the kind of amphorae produced in north Africa, and Simossi said it might have sailed from there and headed for Greece after a stop in Italy.

Foley said deep wrecks are very important because they are almost always more intact than those found in shallow water.

"So they contain far more archaeological and historical information than other sites," he said in an email. "As a result, the deep sea floor of the Mediterranean is the world's greatest repository for information about the earliest civilizations."

The discovery comes amid Greece's acute financial crisis, which has also taken a toll on funding for archaeology.

Simossi said her department, which monitors a vast area rich in ancient wrecks and sunken settlements, had its staff reduced by half because of non-renewed contracts and retirees who were not replaced.

"There were 89 of us and there are 45 left," she said. "We are fighting tooth and claw to keep afloat."

Selecting a Niche For Your Affiliate Revenue Business | Internet ...

Affirmation techniques are becoming much talked about as a route to success. However, for the mainstream of the population, affirmation techniques are still little understood. They are crying out for further investigation.

So, first off, who uses affirmation techniques? Well, successful people, basically.

The methods are not new. Affirmation techniques have been used at least for several hundreds of years, but more likely millennia, by individuals seeking success for themselves and the wider populace. Ironically, decent guides on affirmation techniques are not that easy to come by and some are better than others. In spite of all the hype surrounding affirmation actions, many of us still remain in the dark about the methods employed.

Moreover, it seems that the results of affirmation techniques are still disputed hotly. Some claim they can be empirically proven to work, others say they are complete bunkum. So, who is right? Is there room for dispute?

I, personally, have long been an advocate of affirmation techniques guides because they worked so well for me. I introduced the methods into my everyday life and conversations. I found that my life improved in terms of relationships, personal financial gain and advantages for other people in my personal and business life. So how could I ignore these ideas? I looked into the whole gamut of affirmation techniques in much more detail.

I went from farm hand to president and owner of a very successful private investigations business. And I can truly put it all down to following the right affirmation techniques.

Affirmation techniques have effected enormous changes in many people?s lives which can?t be ignored. That said, a huge swathe of individuals who have used affirmation have found no positive benefit. We should be allowed to question why not. I know it works for me, so what have these people overlooked, or ineffectually implemented, when it comes to affirmation?

Are some people just getting the basics wrong? Is the information wrong? Are the situations we find ourselves in wrong? Or is there an overall view (paradigm) that encompasses the whole symbiosis of affirmation techniques for anyone who cares to buy into this system?

Continual and unabated testing of the various types of method is crucial. Anything short of tried and tested evaluation is spurious, in the least. For sure, benchmark tests may still be banned from the laboratory. Why, I don?t know, but that is our current day situation. Personally, I can only concentrate on anecdotal evidence.

Before I get there, perhaps we could explore what the aim of affirmation actually consists of. The whole picture of affirmation is an elusive one. Confounded, lambasted and derided by many, its true visage and power is yet to be fully appreciated.

To put it at its basic level, affirmation relates a conscious order directed to the subconscious. In the subconscious mind the veracity of conscious thoughts are accepted. Subconscious thoughts then become something natural and are put into effect without any conscious thoughts. In effect, you control the way you are automatically after the initial input via affirmation techniques.

Why is that important? Well, because to influence other people, you must be entirely natural. Otherwise they will pick up that something is wrong, that your behavior is forced. And that is the basis of affirmation techniques. They are positively conscious techniques which become natural and subconscious. However, anything you relate consciously to the subconscious must be regarded by the subconscious as acceptable and entirely believable. If you try and convince the subconscious that you are an operatic diva when in fact you sing like a crow, it just won?t be accepted.

But, and this is a big but, if you tell, or command, your subconscious that you will be a master tenor lead at the Sydney Opera House, you have every possibility of becoming so. For most of us, tension in the conscious mind is a barrier to becoming what we should be. Let us be honest; it really is the truth. We all sing better when alone, in the shower, or wherever. Put us in front of a crowd of spectators and we become tongue-tied and out of tune. But we know we can do it really.

So that?s what affirmation techniques are all about. They are simply a way of convincing ourselves that we are capable of what we could actually do in any case, if it weren?t for our self-consciousness. I know I haven?t ventured into any specific techniques, but let me assure you that they have worked for me. I was terribly self-conscious and self deprecating ten years ago, although I knew I had a good brain and personality. I was earning the minimum wage. Now I run a very successful private investigations bureau.

That is about the best I think I can achieve given my abilities. Other people who have followed affirmation techniques are, or have been, presidents, business magnates and some just much better moms and dads. Affirm, don?t decline.

Deforestation of an urban ecosystem DRAFT RESPONSE (from President Welty)

I woke up this morning to find the following DRAFT response in my campus email inbox, and thought it worth sharing given the interest my original letter has generated. Do share your thoughts on this while I mull it over and respond.

{Update: Several faculty colleagues tell me that they too received versions of the same generic response to letters they wrote on this issue.)

Begin forwarded message:

Subject: Deforestation of an urban ecosystem DRAFT RESPONSE

Date: May 26, 2012 8:20:56 AM PDT

Sent from my iPad

Thank you for your thoughtful and articulate letter regarding the removal of trees in preparation for a parking project. I understand your concern and I agree that there was insufficient discussion as we approached this renovation. I have sent a message to the campus community today [going out Friday] about the need to review our consultative process on major renovations. I also will consult with Academic Senate Chair Lynn Williams and the Senate Executive Committee on the shared governance process that is applicable to projects of this nature. Attached to my campus message was information about the project from Vice President Matson, which includes the re-forestation plans included in the project, which will be of interest to you.
Again, thank you for sharing your concerns. It is caring faculty such as you who are Fresno State's greatest asset.

MarquisPad MP977 tablet dual-core Android 4.0 priced at $249

Matsunichi, a company is planning to kick off its US-ready makeover through the MarquisPad MP977 tablet. The tablet shares the 9.7-inch, 1024 x 768 display of the Le Pan?s tablet, but this one is running a dual-core, 1.2GHz TI chip (likely the same OMAP 4430 as in the Droid Xyboard), ships with Android 4.0 out of the gate and comes in a sleeker.

Only thing which weakens the specs is the Storage.Storage is just 4GB of internal memory and a bundled microSD card,The tablet lasts for 5 hours on battery. But what can you ask for a $249 price tag. This would be available in the late May.

Matsunichi also teased with a roadmap for a pair of future tablets in the process. The 10.1-inch MP1010 will keep the resolution, but it?ll run on a quicker 1.5GHz TI processor and carry a total of 10GB of space when it appears sometime between June and August. If those 0.4 inches of extra glass are just too much to bear, an MP979 will bring all the extra storage and speed of the MP1010 to a 9.7-inch screen sometime between August and September.

Protect Your Home or Business with Security or Surveillance Cameras

Posted on May 25, 2012

If you?re planning on to get one of those particular: check it out here, read some suggestions first. No matter what kind of property you want to protect (home or business), there are lots of ways to practice security and surveillance. This is true because there is truly a crazy amount of creativity in the world of security cameras and other systems. Wireless technology, for example, has really expanded in the last half decade and now there are dozens of new kinds of security cameras and other system applications. When you really look into this industry, you will be incredibly surprised at just how much variety exists within it. This means that it is very important to do lots of research before you spend any real money. This article aims to teach you what you need to know about security and surveillance cameras.

There is a fascinating area of security cameras that are collectively called, covert surveillance cameras. As the name infers, these are hidden cameras that can be used in lots of different settings depending on your security issues. To use one example, these cameras are often placed inside of something ordinary that most people won?t notice and they don?t know it?s there. Sadly, world events have made these kinds of cameras very popular. These are very special cameras and you need to ensure that the camera you get meets your specific monitoring needs. All cameras (truly all) are made with individual specifications and conditions for use.

There are quite a few security and surveillance camera options offered by Swann. The Swann Communications Digital Private Eye security camera is one example and is competitively priced at around $200. For the budget conscious, this camera is an ideal option. This is not a feature rich camera, however. But it will do a good job and allow you to have the peace of mind that a security camera can provide. This camera may be exactly what you?re looking for, though, as there is a market for everything.

Bullet cameras are rather admired for security camera functions, as they have diminutive profiles and are capable of quality images. If you need to use a number of them for your business or home, then you will appreciate the modest price range that can be found with these cameras. The Weather-Proof Color Day/Night Bullet Camera is a seamless example. It is designed for CCTV applications which is a popular and common arrangement with security and surveillance cameras. This exact camera is able to see measurements of up to 45 feet within low light / dark lighting situations. This is by no means a terrible spec and should be a comfortable distance to make out objects in very low light to dark conditions.

There is a robust selection of security and surveillance cameras. You can find a camera to suit practically every known need. You need to know your personal needs very well before you can start seriously shopping for a security camera.

Weekend Special: A Puzzle: Why Aren't They Laughing?

OK, I'm going to show you a video. It made me laugh so hard, my face hurt. But as I watched, I had this odd sense that there was something strange about it, but I couldn't figure out what.

So go ahead and take a look.

But first, to quickly summarize, since this show is from Belgium and unless you're a Flem or a Walloon (that's who lives there, right?) you're not going to understand a word. Erik Hartman, a Belgian TV personality, is talking to two people who've had some medical problems. He asks them something. They answer. When the man speaks, he has an extraordinarily high falsetto voice, so high, it would make even sober people giggle.

That's what Erik does. He giggles. He's mortified, and tries to cover it up, but the giggles keep coming and coming because the man keeps speaking, so Eric desperately turns to the audience, hoping to get sober, but because this is not his lucky day, the first questioner to raise his hand has a voice that's even stranger than Mr. Falsetto. Then all hell breaks loose.

Now watch.

OK. Now here's what got to me...but don't read past this point till you've seen the video. I don't want you to know too much.

?

Did you notice the audience? How come no one in the audience, not a one, is laughing? Or even smiling? I am rolling on the floor, and these people are cold sober. It seems unnatural and seems to contradict what neuroscientist Robert Provine says about laughing ? that it's contagious, that "we laugh when we hear other people laugh. This is an automatic kind of thing." I thought, could this be evidence that Provine's theories need amending?

Unless there's a good explanation for why the audience is so grim: Is it something about being Flemish? Or maybe it's what the man and woman are saying; maybe their experiences are so horrific that Eric's humiliation is less, and their humiliation is greater. So, I hunted for a translation and found one, and discovered that one victim had a tumor operation, the other was operated on for laryngitis (what?), but the two victims didn't give many, or any details...If you want to, you can watch the whole thing again, and see if what they say would make you unable to smile at Erik's predicament.

Something's still wrong. Somebody, one of those people in the background, should be at least smirking. And that's when my NPR colleague Adam Cole pointed out that the translated version of the show on YouTube comes with a comment section, and one of the first comments said go to Wikipedia and look up "Erik Hartman." So I did, and this is what I found:

"Erik Hartman" is a character played by Tom Van Dyck, a Flemish comedian and actor.

So the whole thing was made up. Adam already knew, but what we are watching here is a scene from an episode of a Flemish comedy show that ran on Belgian TV from 2000 to 2002. This is a "mockumentary" telling the story of how a "famous" TV personality, "Erik Hartman," lost his job and his career in one horrible, live-on-TV gigglefest. It's extraordinarily well done, and most internet viewers watching around the world would have no notion that this was a fiction, but it is, which should be a great relief to neuroscientist Robert Provine, our leading theorist on the science of laughter.

Real laughter, it seems, is still contagious. Even in Belgium.

Professor Robert Provine is a neuroscientist at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and the author of Laughter: A Scientific Investigation. Dr. Provine appeared on our Radiolab show, "Laughter."

PUBLIC SPEAKING Part 3 - Academic and Creative Writing Journal ...

PUBLIC SPEAKING Part 3

HOW TO DELIVER A GOOD LECTURE

The Four Aspects of an Effective Lecture

By

VIKRAM KARVE

The lecture is still the most frequently used method of instruction.?

Even if you are not a teacher, in your everyday work you may be constantly using the medium of speech to convey a message or instruction or for informal training or motivational purposes.?

How well you put across your ideas depends to a large extent on now well you have mastered the elements of good public speaking.

An important pre-requisite of a good lecture is that it must be carefully prepared to the extent that you have a firm mastery of the topic you are going to discuss and a clear conception in your mind of how you are going to present the subject.

A good lecture has four simple requirements:

1.?MESSAGE

The first characteristic of a good lecture is that it must have a message. The lecturer must have something to say and what the lecturer says must be worth saying and worth listening to.?

You must clearly bring out the importance of the topic and why the audience needs to hear you and unambiguously state your message so that the audience understands what you want to say.

You may have heard Aristotle?s dictum on?rhetoric:

"Tell them what you are going to say,?say it,?and then tell them what you told them."

So, to get your message across, thus is what you must do:

1. Tell the audience what you are going to tell them

2. Tell them what you want to tell them

3. Tell them what you have told them

2.?NATURALNESS

The second attribute of a good talk is naturalness.?

Remember, the audience wants to hear?YOU?so make it your own lecture, your very own talk ? speak in your very own natural style, don?t try to copy someone else.

3.?SINCERITY

The third feature of an effective lecture is that it must be sincere.?

The audience must be convinced that you believe in what you say, so make sure you talk sincerely and clearly demonstrate that you believe in what you are saying.?

Remember, you cannot fake sincerity so the only way to succeed in giving an impression of sincerity is to be sincere. Don't try to ham, act or pretend - the audience will easily catch on that you do not yourself believe in what you are saying.?

And suppose you do not believe in something or are not fully convinced about a topic.?

Well, why talk about something you do not believe in??

As a Teacher or Speaker you must be true to your conscience and you must not live a lie and say something you do not believe in.?

Remember the saying of Mahatma Gandhi:

What you?think,?

what you?say,?

and what you?do?

must be in?harmony.

This must be evident to the audience.

4.?ENTHUSIASM

Finally, last but not the least, a good lecturer or speaker must radiate enthusiasm and energy.?

An enthusiastic speaker is one who displays great eagerness to have his or her ideas understood, believed and put into practice.?

You should be passionate about what you are speaking about and you must yourself believe in what you are saying.?

If you want your audience to be enthusiastic about listening to you, radiate enthusiasm yourself while speaking.

So, in a nutshell, before you deliver your next lecture, keep these basic four principles in mind (message,?naturalness,?sincerity,?enthusiasm) and you will deliver a great lecture ? you can take my word for it.

All the Best ? May you become an effective communicator and deliver excellent lectures and speeches.

Polished Concrete Floors - Why Do People Love Them

People love concrete floorings so much that they now have them indoors. From the art galleries in Chelsea, to retail outlets on Madison Avenue and the Banana Republic Store in SoHo, concrete floorings have indeed made a fashionable entry. Even celebrities are falling in love; Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Donna Karan, Robert Redford . . . the list is endless. Here's a list of reasons why people love concrete floors:

- It's a single surface. Unlike tiles and stone, concrete does not leave grout lines or markings. The organic quality of cement and sand can be played to the hilt by a skilled professional. You can even choose from various cement oxides and play with colors and patterns. They're versatile and therefore a suitable solution for all floorings- commercial, industrial, and residential.

- The problem with tile, stone and timber based floorings is that dirt and dust act like sandpaper on it, leaving obvious scratches that make the tile look dull. This unfortunately is also the problem with standard coated concrete floorings. But polished concrete floorings that use multiple levels of polishing ensure that your tile has a high gloss finish. This finish does not scratch easily and will last for a long time.

- Traditional timber and carpet floorings are susceptible to accumulation of dust, mold, pollen and pet dander. Allergies are a given in these homes. But polished concrete eliminates dust. Besides, they're easy to clean and hence maintenance free.

- Standard concrete floors break as they age. They're prone to wear and tear caused by rain, cold, surface stress and even improper curing. This is also the case with conventional flooring options. But polished concrete floorings are very durable and can resist the vagaries of weather.

- They enhance the beauty of the floor and even reduce cost of lighting. In fact, people using these floors have found that energy bills have reduced because of the flooring.

- They're easy to maintain as well. Most flooring needs constant maintenance and aggressive scrubbing, but you can maintain polished concrete flooring with a simple mop wash. You don't have to wax or strip. And some of them are of such good quality, that they actually repel oil and other similar substances. Thus cleaning becomes very easy.

- They're non toxic and hence used in industrial units involved in food manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and the other hazardous industries. In fact, they're even preferred in hospitals.

- They're comparatively green and will not likely end up in landfills like other flooring types.
