"We were able to identify him this morning," Ferrer said, adding that two of his colleagues were trying to contact Carrion's family. Ferrer said Carrion was being held at the Versalles police station in the city. It was not clear if he had been charged with any crime.
The government has had no comment, but a spokesperson for Benedict said the pontiff was aware of the incident and concerned about the man's welfare.
"There was contact made to be informed about the person and his situation," the Rev. Federico Lombardi told journalists before the pope's departure Wednesday. "The interest was there and was manifested."
Benedict met with Cuban President Raul Castro and his brother Fidel during the three-day trip. He denounced the country's Marxist system as outmoded ahead of his arrival, and used homilies and speeches to urge greater freedom. He also criticized the 50-year-old U.S. economic embargo, which he said had caused unnecessary suffering.
The Santiago protester's identity had been a mystery to leading members of the island's small dissident community, with some taking to Twitter to try to find out more about him.
Elizardo Sanchez, who monitors human rights on the island and acts as a de facto spokesman for the opposition, said he had no idea who the man was. Cuba considers all the dissidents to be mercenaries paid by Washington to stir up trouble.

The detailed, sweeping images of the sunken ship were made by stitching together hundreds of optical and sonar images collected by three deep-diving robots during a 2010 Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution expedition.
One remotely operated vehicle and two autonomous swimming robots were equipped with sonar, used to make wide-area maps; and advanced 3D camera systems, used to conduct detailed investigations of the shipwreck.
The resulting images are the most comprehensive ever made of the ghostly site.
The initial survey covered an area about the size of Manhattan. The deep-diving vehicles made detailed maps of the seafloor, then moved in to concentrate on the colossal, broken pieces of the Titanic's wreckage, and the thousands of artifacts on the seafloor surrounding the shattered ship.
"There are very few places on the bottom of the ocean that we have a 25-year history of what's happened there, and this study will help scientists and others understand the long term fate of wrecks," WHOI's Bill Lange said in a statement.
"Having a better understanding of the conditions and long-term changes that can occur to these shipwrecks from corrosion, microbial activityand the pressure in the deep sea will give policymakers and environmental managers the tools and data they need," he said.
Lange was a member of the 1985 and 1986 WHOI teams that first discovered and explored the wreck. "There?s no doubt in my mind that the public's interest in Titanic helped propel the development of many of the technologies we use to explore the deep sea today," he said.
The images, made from 250 mosaics of the Titanic site, are published in the April 2012 issue of National Geographic Magazine.
RMS Titanic (a subsidiary of Premier Exhibitions Inc. and the only company permitted by law to recover objects from the wreck of Titanic) will be adding both still images and interactive applications of the work done by WHOI to its touring exhibits, "Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition."

It?s OK to ignore the feedback ... 1. ... because you know who you are as an artist. Scotty McCreery was urged several times last season to sing something other than country songs. He smiled, nodded and kept singing country songs. He won. Hard to argue that he wasn?t smart to trust his talent.
Last week, Jimmy Iovine told Phillip to leave his guitar behind, and Tommy Hilfiger tried to give him a makeover. He nodded politely, ignored both suggestions and got nothing but praise for doing so. Elise Testone entered in a more precarious position and likewise was successful despite ignoring most of the advice she was given. When you know who you are and what you can do, trust yourself.
2. ... when it comes from Jimmy Iovine or the guest mentors. Jimmy has been a very good addition to the show and provides a tiny dose of realism in a show that?s often all about the positive. But as far as his opinions go, he?s like the local official who is always overruled. He can make pronouncements, but the guys who count are the three judges on the appeals court named Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez?and Steven Tyler. Don?t listen to Jimmy if it will put you in conflict with the big bosses.
Similarly, Tommy Hilfiger is on the show to sell product, not to make you a better singer. If his clothes are going to make you self-conscious onstage and sing worse, don?t listen to him. Now that Paula Abdul is gone, how many people really care how fashion-forward you look anyway? And did going with his suggestions do Erika Van Pelt any good?
3. ?... when it?s the opposite of what they told you last week. This perennially kills some of the younger singers. They?re so eager to please that they do whatever they?re told, which pulls them in a million different directions and leaves them without an identity. DeAndre Brackensick, we're talking to you here.
4. ... when the advice is dumb. Pia Toscano was an early favorite last year. Then the judges mentioned that they?d like to see her sing something besides a ballad. She gave them what they wanted and sang ?River Deep, Mountain High.? She got the boot.
Contestants have to keep in mind that sometimes the judges are being profound, and sometimes they?re talking to hear the sound of their own voices. Don?t get kicked off the show just because Randy felt the need to say something after five minutes of silence and you took him seriously.
It?s not OK to ignore the feedback ... 1. ... when you?re rude about it. Look, it?s easy to get a big head because you?re on this hit show singing for millions of fans. You may think you know it all and that any criticism is merely a speed bump on the yellow brick road to stardom. In other words, you may look like Elise for the first couple of weeks of the finals.
But keep in mind that guys like Jimmy wouldn?t have given you the time of day six months ago, and now all these big shots are trying to help you out. Take the advice or don?t, but don?t act like you?re above it all.
2. ... when you waste their time. It?s perfectly fine for Heejun to stick with his comedy/music act when its his turn to perform. That?s his persona. Besides, Taylor Hicks won by being an entertainer in season five, so there is some precedent for success here. But it?s not OK for him to blow off the mentoring sessions and turn them into his comic foil every week. All that does is make those people mad. Every now and then, every contestant needs to at least pretend to listen and feed the egos of those above them. Which leads us to ...
3. ... when it angers the judges. It?s one thing to annoy the mentors. But getting the judges on your bad side is bad news. Plenty of viewers base their decisions on what that trio says. So for Heejun, it was smart to make nice with Steven on Wednesday. You don?t want him sniping at you from the stand. He can make your life miserable, and the sympathy votes only take you so far.
4. ... when it?s good advice Randy, J.Lo, Steven, Jimmy and everyone else on the show may be there mostly because of casting. But as it's pointed out every week, the famouse faces?all have been successful in the music business and know what it takes to reach the top. Shockingly enough, sometimes they know what they?re talking about.
In particular, listen to J.Lo. When she talks about engaging with the audience, she's got just a smidge of experience in putting those suggestions into practice for herself. And in general, taking the judges notes on small things makes them feel good about themselves. If they're feeling good, odds are favorable that they'll say things that make you feel good as well.

?Primary care physicians could use UV photographs with children and young teens to provide better sun protection counseling,? says Ryan Gamble, MD, the study?s first author and postdoctoral researcher in the lab of Robert Dellavalle, MD, PhD, MSPH, investigator at the University of Colorado Cancer Center and associate professor of dermatology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
?Before middle school kids think about tanning, we want them to see these pictures,? Dellavalle says.
In fact, the power of sunspots seen in UV photographs to motivate sun-guarding behaviors such as avoiding tanning beds, staying out of the midday sun, proper sunscreen use and the use of protective clothing has been known from previous studies.
?But while the photographs make an impression, not much has been known about what the spots in the photographs actually mean,? Gamble says. The group is the first to show that the amount of sun damage shown in ultraviolet photographs is correlated with other melanoma risk factors, such as skin color, hair color, eye color and freckles.
?For these children at increased risk, it is even more important to protect themselves from the sun and ultraviolet radiation, ? Gamble says.
With UV photographs used to create greater awareness of melanoma and motivate increased use of sun prevention in the high-risk population, ?much of the occurrence of the disease and its complications can be prevented,? Gamble says.

Measures to help reduce the risk of bone loss and fracture must be taken for individuals on longer-term oral glucocorticoid therapy
Millions of people around the world are prescribed glucocorticoids for a wide variety of inflammatory conditions, including, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and inflammatory bowel diseases. Although they are effective and widely used, one of the potentially serious side effects of these medications is glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is a serious condition in which bones become thinner and more fragile, making them more likely to break (fracture). Glucocorticoids can cause rapid bone loss in the first three to six months of treatment, leading to an increased risk of fracture. The greatest risk is seen for vertebral fractures.
In their newly issued joint guidance paper for health professionals worldwide*, the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and the European Calcified Tissue Society (ECTS) have warned that specific precautions to help reduce the risk of bone loss and fracture must be taken for individuals on longer-term oral glucocorticoid therapy.
Professor Cyrus Cooper, chair of the IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors, commented, "Patients who are taking prednisolone, cortisone or other glucocorticoids for three months or longer, should be advised to take appropriate measures to help reduce the accompanying bone loss. While osteoporosis itself is painless, fractures resulting from osteoporosis can cause significant pain and lead to immobility, long-term disability and even higher risk of death."
WHO IS MOST AT RISK?
Generally, the higher the dose and the longer the glucocorticoid treatment continues, the higher the risk of fracture. People who take glucocorticoids orally or intravenously are at greater risk than those who inhale glucocorticoids for asthma, or apply lotions to the skin. However, using a high-dose steroid inhaler in the long term may also increase the risk of fracture. Injections of glucocorticoids into joints are not thought to affect the skeleton.
In terms of age, men and women over 70, and postmenopausal women and men over 50 who have had a previous fracture or take high doses of glucocorticoid, are at greater risk than younger men and women. Nevertheless, even younger people on glucocorticoids are advised to take precautions to help reduce bone loss. Dr. Tobie de Villiers, president of the International Menopause Society (IMS), commented, "Bone loss is a concern for all women around the age of menopause, and especially for the almost 5% of postmenopausal women worldwide who take oral glucocorticoid therapy. The IMS encourages women to be aware of this potentially dangerous side-effect of therapy and to discuss what precautions can be taken with their doctors."
HOW TO PROTECT AGAINST GLUCOCORTICOID-INDUCED OSTEOPOROSIS
In their guidance paper*, the IOF and ECTS outline strategies and best practices for the management of bone health in patients on glucocorticoids.
As bone loss occurs rapidly in the first three to six months of treatment, patients should be taking preventive action from the start: they must ensure adequate amounts of calcium and protein in their diet, get enough vitamin D through safe exposure to sunlight and do regular weight-bearing exercise to keep bones and muscles active. It is also important that they stop smoking, and reduce alcohol intake. Supplement tablets, especially of vitamin D, may be prescribed as it is often difficult to ensure adequate levels through diet and sunlight.
Based on a clinical check-up and the results of bone mineral density (BMD) testing and a FRAX assessment ( http://www.shef.ac.uk/FRAX/ ), the doctor may decide to minimize the dose of glucocorticoids or use alternative medications. Some high risk patients may also be prescribed special bone protective therapy to reduce fracture risk. Patients on long-term glucocorticoid therapy should be monitored at appropriate intervals. This may include BMD testing, annual height measurements to check for possible height loss due to vertebral fractures, and, in patients receiving bone protective therapy, assessment to ensure compliance with therapy.
Professor Bente L. Langdahl, president of the European Calcified Tissue Society, stated, "It is important to note that no one should ever stop or reduce glucocorticoid treatment unless directed to by their doctor. At the same time, we advise that all patients and doctors be acutely aware of the need to monitor and take preventive action against bone loss as soon as glucocorticoid therapy begins."

The speculation of what Apple is going to do with all their cash has long been a favorite topic in the tech and financial press.
