'MAKE MY DAY'

The crowd roared at its first glimpse of actor/director Clint Eastwood, the night's surprise guest. "Save some for Mitt," he told them.

In free-wheeling, joke-filled remarks, Eastwood remembered the enthusiasm around President Barack Obama's nomination four years ago.

"Everybody's crying. Oprah was crying. I was even crying," he joked.

Then he quickly pivoted to the serious: "I haven't cried that hard since I found out there's 23 million unemployed people in this country. That is something to cry for. That is a disgrace, a national disgrace."

"This administration hasn't done enough to cure that," Eastwood said, and it's "time for somebody else to come along and solve the problem."

Eastwood got an adoring standing ovation by telling the delegates, "When somebody does not do the job, we've got to let him go."

At their insistence, he ended with his Dirty Harry catchphrase, joined by the crowd: "Go ahead, make my day."

SECRET'S OUT: CLINT EASTWOOD

Surprise: Clint Eastwood is the night's mystery speaker.

In a showbiz flourish, the GOP convention appearance of the "Dirty Harry" star and Oscar-winning director of "Unforgiven" and "Million Dollar Baby" was kept secret.

The suspense had built through the week as rumors circulated that Eastwood might make a Mitt Romney's day.

___

THE CHANT: 'U-S-A!'

Political conventions are one thing. But the Olympics ? well, that's something that can really get a crowd's blood stirring.

As a lineup of former Olympic medalists took to the stage at the Republican National Convention, the crowd of delegates burst into a spontaneous, fist-pumping chant of "USA! USA!"

Was it Tampa ... or was it London again?

___

ON THE ISSUES

Mitt Romney's focus on jobs and the deficit in his acceptance speech plays to his strengths on the issues, while Thursday's convention agenda seeks to shore up his weak points. The latest Associated Press-GfK poll finds him most competitive with Obama on fiscal matters. Among registered voters, he leads the president by 10 points as more trusted to handle the federal budget deficit, and holds narrow 4-point edges on creating jobs and handling the economy.

But Romney trails Obama by 15 points on handling social issues, and by 6 points on handling Medicare, a central focus of Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan's congressional career.

The focus among Thursday night's convention speakers on Romney's personal and professional life could help to boost his personal image. Registered voters split evenly in their impressions of the former governor ? 46 percent have a favorable impression, 46 percent an unfavorable one. That lags behind Obama's 52 percent favorable to 46 percent unfavorable mark on this question.

Romney also trails the president on the question of which candidate is the stronger leader (50 percent Obama to 41 percent Romney) and is seen as less apt to understand average people's problems (51 percent say Obama better understands compared with 36 percent Romney).

WHOSE CONVENTION?

Whose convention is this?

If you use Newt and Callista Gingrich's remarks as a guide, you'd think the convention in Tampa was for Ronald Reagan. The former House speaker and his wife invoked Reagan 13 times during their brief remarks.

Mentions of Mitt Romney? Four.

___

A SOMBER HUSH

The floor of a national political convention can be a chaotic place. Many delegates do listen to every speech as the evening goes on. But other delegates mill around, chatting with friends, thronging the aisles, dashing out for food ? and above all else, angling for photos with well-known faces. It's often noisy and frequently raucous.

But every once in a while the convention floor stills for a bit. That happened Thursday night when Ted and Pat Oparowski, a Mormon couple, took the stage to describe a painful period in their life ? when their teenage son, David, was diagnosed in 1979 with non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

Ted Oparowski, who described himself as someone of modest means, told the crowd how Mitt Romney had struck up a friendship with their son, through his work in the church, visiting the 14-year-old during the months he struggled with cancer before dying.

As the couple spoke in slow, sometimes halting voices, delegates in the aisles turned and listened. Voices dropped. The stillness lasted until the couple left the stage.

___

FAMILY LEGACY

The family Bush is making sure its message gets out.

Among the few mentions of the last Republican elected - and re-elected president - were by his family, who seemed to use the brief time spent on President Obama's predecessor to try to polish George W. Bush's legacy.

A five-minute video aired at the convention Wednesday included side-by-side interviews with George W. Bush and his father, former President George H. W. Bush.

The senior Bush noted of his son's administration: "I think the thing I take pride in is the integrity."

The younger Bush's wife Laura added: "I'm so proud of George."

Romney advisers dismissed that speakers were advised to stay away from the Bush years. But some delegates said it was understandable that he didn't show.

Bush's brother Jeb, Florida's former governor, gave the most direct defense at the outset of his speech to the convention Thursday. It was completely off the advance script, and it was emphatic, praising "a man of integrity, courage and honor" who kept the country safe "during incredibly challenging times."

When he finished, he transitioned to his prepared remarks this way: "Now that I've gotten that off my chest, let's talk a little bit about our kids and education."

? Thomas Beaumont ? Twitter http://twitter.com/

___

GINGRICH X 2

Newt Gingrich, known for doing things his way, capped his losing presidential bid with a unique GOP convention appearance alongside his wife, Callista.

Taking turns speaking, sort of like Oscar presenters, the pair praised Mitt Romney by comparing him to President Ronald Reagan.

Barack Obama is no Reagan, they made clear. He's more like Jimmy Carter, the Gingriches asserted.

"It's striking how President Carter and President Obama both took our nation down a path that in four years weakened America's confidence in itself and our hope for a better future," Newt said.

Left behind were any hard feelings from the heated primary campaign in which he called Romney a liar at one point and in a debate urged him to drop "the pious baloney."

___

HISPANIC OUTREACH

Republicans continued their strong outreach to Hispanic voters during Thursday night's convention.

All week they have been highlighting Hispanic elected officials from around the country, but on Thursday the effort kicked into even a higher gear. In a short video, elected officials from New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez to U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida talked about how their party's values are the values of many Hispanics ? from strong family ties to strong support for small business.

On the heels of the video, Romney's son Craig Romney spoke in Spanish to the crowd, followed by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush ? a popular politician who also spoke to the crowd in Spanish.

Scheduled to be up later in the evening: Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida ? perhaps the country's most up-and-coming Hispanic official.

? Sally Buzbee

___

BROTHERLY LOVE

Jeb Bush used his turn on the Republican's national stage to make a spirited, personal defense of his brother, George W. Bush, whose oft-criticized presidency has been barely mentioned at the party's convention.

"My brother, well, I love my brother. He is a man of integrity and courage and honor," Bush said before launching into his formal remarks, which focused on education policy.

Early in his brother's two-term tenure, America was shocked by the Sept. 11 terror attacks. Jeb Bush said: "During incredibly challenging times, he kept us safe."

Delegates responded with a standing ovation.

___

THE WONDER YEAR?

While speaker after speaker at the Republican National Convention lambasted Barack Obama ? and more than one mocked the final night of his 2008 convention in Denver ? they appropriated one of the best-known songs of that Democratic night's musical star, Stevie Wonder.

The Obama campaign played the song, "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours," frequently at the end of the candidate's rallies that year, and Wonder himself sang it on the final night of Obama's convention at Denver's Invesco Field.

Thursday night, playing Newt and Callista Gingrich offstage, the GOP convention's band swung into the song, the second time it was featured in the hall this week.

___

FULL-THROATED DEFENSE

The last Republican president, George W. Bush, has been almost invisible at this convention ? until Thursday night. Almost no previous speaker had mentioned the president who immediately preceded Barack Obama. Vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan even took an oblique swipe at Bush, noting in his speech Wednesday night that the country's budget and debt problems had been caused not just by Obama, but by administrations before his.

That changed Thursday night, when the former president's brother, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush made an impromptu ? and full throated ? defense of his brother at the start of his speech to the delegates. Jeb Bush's speech was on education. But before he leapt in, Jeb Bush got the crowd roaring by telling the crowd of delegates "I love my brother." In a very troubled time for America, Jeb Bush said, "He kept us safe."

George W. Bush was just a few months into his presidency when terrorists flew airplanes into the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon, killing thousands of Americans. In the aftermath of those Sept. 11 attacks, then-President Bush ordered American troops first into Afghanistan to attack al-Qaida and then later into Iraq to overthrow dictator Saddam Hussein.

___

QUICKQUOTE: JEB ON GEORGE

"Mr. President, it is time to stop blaming your predecessor for your failed economic policies. You were dealt a tough hand but your policies have not worked." ? Former Fla. Gov. Jeb Bush, after praising his brother, former President George W. Bush.

___

REAGAN REDUX

Ronald Reagan is at the Republican National Convention once again ? if merely in spirit.

As the final session began Thursday night, a nostalgic Reagan video backed by music and sentimental imagery summoned the way the conservatives have framed his legacy. "As we continue our journey we think of those who traveled before us," Reagan's voice said over clips of war veterans and families. In a montage of images that ranged from space shuttles to Sandra Day O'Connor, his narrative was repackaged and re-offered to conservatives 23 years after he left office and eight years after he died. "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall," Reagan said once again Thursday night.

There's no more potent image for the Republicans to summon, of course. This is a man who is the most towering icon of modern conservatism. When Reagan is brought out, it's always about imagery and implied GOP renewal ? about a "springtime of hope" and the notion of America as the shining city on the hill.

Then the music swelled and faded, the video ended and two fresh speakers walked on stage: Newt Gingrich and his wife Callista.

? Ted Anthony ? Twitter http://www.twitter.com/anthonyted

___

QUICKQUOTE: RENEWAL

"It's not about the past. It's not about what was done wrong. It's not about blaming America. It's quite the opposite. Tonight we embark on a renewal of the American dream." ? U.S. Rep. Connie Mack, R-Fla.

______

WHAT'S OBAMA DOING?

White House spokesman Jay Carney says Obama is "fully aware" of the happenings at the Republican convention in Tampa this week. But he says he doesn't think the president watched Paul Ryan's speech Wednesday night, nor does he know whether Obama will watch Romney address the GOP convention Thursday.

Carney didn't say whether he thought Ryan's speech was factually accurate. But he criticized Romney's campaign more broadly for distorting Obama's record and policy positions in speeches and advertisements.

"Perhaps when the facts aren't on your side, you ignore the facts," Carney says.

___

HIGH-SPEED RAIL

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn is all smiles, happy that so far his city has avoided widespread confrontations and arrests that have marred other conventions.

But that doesn't mean he's pleased with everything.

Buckhorn, a Democrat, used his daily press briefing to argue Tampa needs more mass transit options to build from the "worldwide" exposure it got during the convention.

In early 2011, Florida Gov. Rick Scott turned down a federal grant to help build a high-speed rail line between Tampa and Orlando. The Republican governor argued the state would wind up spending more than anticipated because it would cost more than initially projected.

Buckhorn took a swipe at Scott by noting that Detroit's mayor had thanked him recently because high-speed rail money once destined for Florida was redirected to other states and cities.

___

POLICE-PROTESTER LOVE?

As the Republican National Convention wears on, protesters are getting worn out.

The busloads of protesters ? who are staying at a makeshift camp dubbed "Romneyville" ? have seen their food and water supplies dwindle. Law enforcement has noticed, as well.

So on Thursday morning, police brought boxed lunches of sandwiches, fruits and ice-cold water to Romneyville. Chief Jane Castor said police had extra food, so they decided to donate it rather than throw it out.

Castor, during a morning news conference, said simply: "We're here to serve the public."

___

WHO'S TUNING IN

Sure, political conventions aim to fire up the die-hard partisans in the arena, but they're also made-for-TV events designed to appeal to undecided voters. Recent polling suggests they may not be hitting their mark.

A Pew Research Center survey before the Republican convention began found just over four in 10 adults were interested in following each party's convention.

Partisans were most interested in their own gathering ? 70 percent of Republicans were interested in this week's events and 66 percent of Democrats were interested in their party's upcoming convention. Fewer partisans check in on the other team: 41 percent of Democrats were interested in the goings-on in Tampa, Fla., while 28 percent of Republicans were interested in tuning in for Obama's re-nomination.

Among independents, just 37 percent said they were interested in the Republican convention, 36 percent in the Democratic one.

For Republicans angling for young, disaffected Obama voters, the convention may not be their best chance. Overnight ratings for the GOP convention suggested less than 10 percent of viewers were under age 35. The Pew poll found less than 30 percent of twenty-somethings were interested in the political conventions.

ROMNEY PREVIEW

In his big speech, Mitt Romney will make a direct appeal to voters who felt excited to cast a ballot for Barack Obama four years ago.

"If you felt that excitement when you voted for Barack Obama, shouldn't you feel that way now that he's President Obama?" Romney says in excerpts released before his Thursday night speech. "You know there's something wrong with the kind of job he's done as president when the best feeling you had, was the day you voted for him."

You've been let down, Romney's telling former Obama voters, by a presidency that lapsed into disappointment and division.

"Many Americans have given up on this president, but they haven't ever thought about giving up," Romney says. "Not on themselves. Not on each other. And not on America."

Riffing on Obama's 2008 catchphrase, "Yes we can," Romney plans to tell Americans, "Now is the moment when we CAN do something."

What can Americans do, according to Romney? Vote for him.

? Connie Cass ?Twitter http://twitter.com/ConnieCass

___

POLITICAL FOOTBALL

There may be large swaths of a Republican stronghold otherwise occupied during Mitt Romney's big speech Thursday night. College football debuts at the same time, and that can trump anything else on TV, especially in the pigskin-crazy South.

The marquee matchup happens down in Tennessee, with Steve Spurrier's No. 9 South Carolina Gamecocks taking on the Vanderbilt Commodores in Nashville at 7 p.m. EDT. But the GOP probably isn't worried about losing interest or votes in either South Carolina or Tennessee, both of which are normally reliable Republican states in presidential contests.

Mahama set to run in Ghana's elections

ACCRA, Ghana (AP) ? A spokesman for Ghana's ruling party says it has nominated President John Dramani Mahama, who stepped into the leadership role following the recent death of John Atta-Mills, to run in this year's presidential election in December.

George Lawson of the National Democratic Congress party said Thursday that Mahama, a communications expert, will face National Patriotic Party candidate Nana Akufo-Addo, who lost to Mills in 2004 by less than 1 percent.

Mahama, who had been vice-president, was sworn into office the night of President Mills' death in July in what analysts hailed as a smooth transition in a coup-prone region.

Samsung says Jelly Bean update coming to Galaxy S III and Note 101 'very soon'

It's not as specific as we're guessing some would like, but Samsung confirmed during its IFA 2012 keynote today that a Jelly Bean update is coming to both the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note 10.1 "very soon." That is at least a bit more encouraging than the "later this year" that we last heard for the Note 10.1, and follows a leak of an official GS3 Jelly Bean build earlier this month. The original Galaxy Note wasn't specifically mentioned on stage, but it did make an appearance on the company's Jelly Bean slide, so we'd assume an update for it is coming as well, if not necessarily "very soon."

I Hired Help and I Don't Feel Guilty - Black And Married With Kids.com

Every year my husband and I host what we call our ?Barbecue Extravaganza? where we invite our family and our closest, dearest friends. We both look forward to entertaining and celebrating the end of summer with the people we cherish. As you can imagine there is quite a bit of planning that goes into this event. We have to plan the menu, the activities and prepare our home for the attendees. Of course the food and activities don?t require much thought. However, preparing our home is the piece I don?t always look forward to.

As a working mom my days seem to run right into each other and I never feel as though I have enough hours in the day. Couple that with how tired I am after work and I find I don?t have enough energy left to do anything else. I work a full-time job during the day, start my other job as a parent when I get home and work my other business during the evenings. Some days I am completely drained. So, this time I hired help.

Yep, I said it and I confess. For the first time ever I called in a house cleaning service to clean my home; not my whole home, just 3 rooms. At first, I went around and around about it and even felt guilty. I should be able to clean my own house, right? Of course I am able, but sometimes I am just plain old tired and I don?t want to. The decision to call a cleaning company was actually one of the best I have ever made.

First, I did my research and read reviews and selected the best and most reasonable service. Once the cleaning crew (of 1) arrived I honestly didn?t know what to do with myself. Part of me wanted to help out and the other part felt as though I should appear busy so he wouldn?t think I was too lazy. As I thought more about it, I came to the conclusion I actually deserve this. After my house was spotless and I shared with the cleaner how great everything looked I also shared my reservations. I mentioned how guilty I felt in the beginning with hiring a service. He assured me there was nothing to feel guilty about because this was an afforded luxury and he thoroughly enjoys the work. Immediately I released every little ounce of guilt because he was right.

Sometimes busy parents need a little relief. I made the decision that it?s okay for me to receive that sort of assistance when I need it. Whenever I feel overwhelmed and tired again, you bet I will be calling on my new cleaning service.

BMWK, would you feel guilty about hiring help?

PFT: Westbrook retiring as an Eagle

James+Starks+Tampa+Bay+Buccaneers+v+Green+6Oj1ae7TS_ylGetty Images

Packers running back James Starks has missed out on opportunities to stake a claim to a spot in the backfield rotation because of turf toe and it doesn?t sound like he?ll be healthy enough to take advantage of them anytime soon.

?James Starks, just talking to the medical staff, is coming along slow,? coach Mike McCarthy said, via Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. ?So we?ll just continue to treat him. He hasn?t made a whole of progress here of late.?

Starks hasn?t practiced since suffering the injury in the team?s first preseason game, leaving him to watch as Cedric Benson arrived and moved right to the top of the depth chart of the position. The Packers have also been taking the wraps off of second-year player Alex Green as he gets further away from the torn ACL that spoiled his rookie season and both backs appear to be better fits for what the Pack wants out of the position this year than Starks did in his brief availability during camp.

That raises the question of what kind of future Starks has in Green Bay. The uncertainty regarding his health makes it hard to hold a roster spot for him if the Packers risk losing a player who can definitely contribute to the team in the early part of the season, especially if the Pack isn?t sure he?d be getting many reps when he?s healthy. Their other choices would be to put Starks on injured reserve or release him, both of which would leave them without his services when and if he gets well.

In theory, Starks would be an ideal candidate to take advantage of the proposed change to injured reserve which would have allowed a team to activate a player after eight weeks. The league and the NFLPA couldn?t agree to pass the rule because the league wanted to change the rules regarding padded practices in exchange for implementing the revised IR rule and a later trade deadline.

Without that option available, it looks like the Packers are going to have a tough choice to make about Starks in the coming days.

HBT: Yanks' Soriano slammed for not facing media

Rafael Soriano has had a fantastic season overall. Really, if back in April you told the Yankees Universe that Mariano Rivera was gonna miss almost all of the season because of a torn ACL, people would have assumed disaster. Instead, Soriano has nailed down most saves ? he?s 33 for 36 where even Mariano River blew five saves last year ? and has kept the bullpen humming.

But he got lit up last night and then he bolted the clubhouse before the press got there. John Harper says that?s bad news.?Of course, because this is Harper, the notion is put forth with enough sanctimony and drama to choke a horse:

One thing for sure: Soriano doesn?t handle himself in defeat the way his predecessor did. Nobody was more accountable or classier when he did blow one than Rivera ??He was gone before the Yankees? PR people could even find him to ask if he would answer questions from the media.?And don?t get this wrong: it?s not a media issue, it?s an accountability issue. It?s about being a professional in a clubhouse that has oozed professionalism since the day Derek Jeter showed up some 16 years ago.

Overwrought phrasing aside, he?s not wrong. I personally think that to a lot of reporters it is a media thing, but Harper correctly notes that players hate it when the guy everyone wants to talk to because of his screw up leaves and they have to give the quotes for the next day?s unhappy stories.

Harper wants to make it into some harbinger of doom and by the constant comparison to Rivera he wants to make it much larger than it is, which is kinda silly. ?But it?s not nothing. Soriano probably annoyed his teammates with that.

Photo Gallery from the Rebus Works Food Truck Rodeo | Raleigh's ...

There were hundreds of people at Rebus Works this past Saturday to support the Saturday Market with a well-orchestrated food truck rodeo. As you walked up, you could hear the hum of the food truck generators. But then, the buzz from the crowd and the aroma of the food would overtake your senses.

Then there was entertainment. If GOUGE Wrestling won?t get you pumped up, then fire dancing from Cirque de Vol was sure to heat things up.

I brought the family out to see what the buzz was all about and it was a lively time. Of course, we bumped into friends, as I?m sure anyone who attended did. And then of course there was the array of food trucks to choose from.

Dining options included: ?Klausie?s Pizza,?Triangle Raw Foods,?Captain Poncho?s Tacos,?Sympathy for the Deli,?Chirba Chirba Dumpling,?Bulkogi Korean Barbeque?and?Porchetta. Locopops and a variety of beers were on the dessert menu. Big Boss? Angry Angel and LoneRider?s Sweet Josie were on tap and cold cans of Mother Earth?s Second Wind and Modelo Especial sold out quickly while the stash of? PBR lasted slightly longer.

See the good time you either enjoyed or missed.

Australian football youth development | The Roar

Following Australia?s performance at the Olympics, which some say was less than acceptable, the head of the Australian Olympic Committee John Coates has advocated for increased spending on grassroots sports.

This is in line with the 2009 Crawford Report, which also advocates for increasing the proportion of total monies allocated to grassroots sports.

This is not a controversial idea, and one that perhaps most Australians would also support. Indeed, sports participation has many physiological and psychosocial benefits for young people.

Recently, Craig Foster has suggested that football is in a better position than most other sports to drive an initiative that is aimed at increasing the number and experience of youth sport participants.

Football has 360,000 participants nationwide from the ages of 5-14, thus making it the number one participation sport in the country for boys and number six for girls.

Further, FIFA, unlike any other major sporting body, has systematically undertaken scientific research which demonstrates the significant health benefits that are derived from football participation. These include positive effects on fitness, strength, skeletal health, self-esteem, social skills and quality of life.

The FFA has worked hard over recent years to overhaul the ?system? of youth football in Australia. Certainly the advances made by way of small-sided-games and the national curriculum have been substantial. However, these changes have served the sole purpose of generating players with a higher technical and tactical proficiency.

The ultimate aim, of course, is to have better players competing at a higher level, thereby lifting Australia to be one of the top footballing countries worldwide.

More importantly we have to ask how have these changes served to increase the positive experiences of our young footballers? How have they served to maintain and increase the participation base of football to ensure its competitive advantage in this space? And, how have they served the physiological and psychosocial development of young players?

The changes that have been made to the education of coaches in Australia epitomise the overhauls made by the FFA ?system-wide?. The community coach education courses have been enhanced through the addition of a coherent framework of technical and tactical education.

Thus coaches are able to produce more highly skilled and tactically astute players (assuming, of course, that the coach can actually pass on this information to players).

However, coaching is never this simple. Indeed, by maintaining a focus on technical and tactical knowledge, our coach education courses leave coaches absolutely unprepared to facilitate any meaningful personal gains for young athletes.

Where is the information on how to build a meaningful positive relationship with a young player? Where is the information on athlete development and skill acquisition?

Where is the information on communication and leadership?

These glaring omissions reinforce the narrow focus of the FFA at the exclusion of all else.

No coach ? young or old ? could ever walk away from a community coaching course feeling prepared to handle a team of young players. How do they deal with misbehaviour? How do they deal with bullying? How do they deal with the parents?

These questions remain unanswered in the service of trying to develop ?better? players.

But let?s face the truth, until coaches can be taught the necessary skills within the coach education system, Australia will reap no reward in terms of increasing its participant base, providing a better experience for young players, or (given that coaches will have no idea about how to teach the technical and tactical knowledge that they receive) even more skillful players.

The FFA must get this right. However, this will require a change of mindset. A change of philosophy. Great players, and great footballing nations, are not built solely and technically and tactical proficiency. They are built on a football culture.

The FFA needs to change the goal posts and realise that overhauling the ?system? can only be an overwhelmingly positive thing when those changes serve the vast majority of footballers in this country ? the young participants ? who will go on to form the backbone of Australia?s footballing culture in the years to come.

Superior fuel cell material developed

Monday, August 27, 2012

Using a mixture of gold, copper and platinum nanoparticles, IBN researchers have developed a more powerful and longer lasting fuel cell material. This breakthrough was published recently in leading journal, Energy and Environmental Science.

Fuel cells are a promising technology for use as a source of electricity to power electronic devices, vehicles, military aircraft and equipment. A fuel cell converts the chemical energy from hydrogen (fuel) into electricity through a chemical reaction with oxygen. A fuel cell can produce electricity continuously as long as there is a fuel supply.

Current commercially available fuel cells use platinum nanoparticles as the catalyst to speed up the chemical reaction because platinum is the only metal that can resist the highly acidic conditions inside such a cell. However, the widespread use of fuel cells has been impeded by the high cost of platinum and its low stability.

To overcome this limitation, a team of researchers led by IBN Executive Director Professor Jackie Y. Ying has discovered that by replacing the central part of the catalyst with gold and copper alloy and leaving just the outer layer in platinum, the new hybrid material can provide 5 times higher activity and much greater stability than the commercial platinum catalyst. With further optimization, it would be possible to further increase the material's catalytic properties.

IBN's new nanocomposite material can produce at least 0.571 amperes of electric current per milligram of platinum, compared to 0.109 amperes per milligram of platinum for commercial platinum catalysts. This is also the first time that a catalyst has been shown to enhance both the stability and activity for the fuel cell reaction with a significantly reduced platinum content.

To make this catalyst more active than the commercial platinum catalyst, the researchers have designed the core of the nanocrsytalline material to be a gold-copper alloy, which has slightly smaller lattice spacing than the platinum coating on the nanocrystal's surface. This creates a compressive strain on the surface platinum atoms, making the platinum more active in the rate-limiting step of oxygen reduction reaction for the fuel cell. Replacing the core of the nanoparticle with the less expensive gold-copper alloy cuts down the usage of platinum, a highly expensive noble metal.

Professor Ying said, "A key research focus at IBN is to develop green energy technologies that can lead to greater efficiency and environmental sustainability. More active and less costly than conventional platinum catalysts, our new nanocomposite system has enabled us to significantly advance fuel cell development and make the technology more practical for industrial applications."

Egypt president names mainly Islamist adviser team

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's Islamist president Mohammed Morsi on Monday named a team of 21 advisers and aides that includes three women and two Christians and a large number of Islamist-leaning figures, backing off campaign promises to appoint a Christian and a woman as vice presidents.

The move is the latest by Morsi, a longtime member of the Muslim Brotherhood who was inaugurated in late June, to establish his authority and break with the era of ousted President Hosni Mubarak by forming his own leadership.

Morsi's office has sought to depict him as independent of the Brotherhood and as a leader who wants to bring a wider political spectrum behind him, including liberals ? but the Brotherhood still holds the preponderance of power in his administration.

In midst of a fierce presidential election campaign earlier this year, Morsi sought to broaden his support and allay fears of Brotherhood dominance by promising to appoint a youth, a woman and a Christian to vice president posts. The promise brought an outcry from ultraconservative Islamists known as Salafis who said they would not accept a Christian or woman vice president, since they say neither is allowed to serve as head of state.

Since Morsi's inauguration, some Brotherhood officials have contended he was forced into the promises, signaling that he would likely back down. Earlier this month, Morsi appointed a senior judge, Mahmoud Mekki, as vice president. When asked, Morsi's spokesman Yasser Ali told reporters that there will be only one vice president for the time being.

Instead, Ali on Monday announced the formation of Morsi's "presidential team," which includes four senior aides and a 17-member council of advisers, which includes seven figures seen as political liberals and 10 who have Islamist leanings of various degrees.

The rolling back of the promises reflects Morsi's growing confidence as a president who holds "super powers" exceeding those of his predecessors, said Nabil Abdel-Fatah, a scholar with Al Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies. Morsi holds both executive power and legislative authority after he sidelined the top military generals who ruled Egypt after Mubarak's ouster on Feb. 11. 2011. The generals had dissolved parliament and taken on legislative powers, so when they were sidelined, Morsi seized the power to make laws ? a power he has used once so far.

"The announcement of the new team has nothing to do with the promises Morsi made before," said Abdel-Fatah. "Those chose will pose no challenge to the president ... this is only for cosmetic purposes."

Abdel-Fatah said the appointments suggested Morsi does not want to share powers with a vice president. "This is just another sign that we are heading to a deadlock with the Brotherhood insisting on monopolizing power," he said.

The four senior aides include Pakinam el-Sharkawi, a female political scientist who will be in charge of "political issues" and Coptic Christian writer Samer Morcus, whose title is "aide for democratic transition." The oterhs are a senior Brotherhood member, Essam Hadad, who will be the aide for foreign relations and international cooperation and a leading Salafi, Emad Abdel-Ghafour, who was named the president's aide for "society outreach."

The 17-member council includes two women and a Christian, Rafiq Habib, who is deputy leader of the Muslim Brotherhood's political arm Freedom and Justice party and one of the few Christian members of the Islamist group.

The council includes six members of the Muslim Brotherhood's Guidance Bureau, the group's top executive body, and three other figures seen as Islamist-leaning.

Ali, the spokesman, did not say what the council's role would be but said it will "meet regularly."

Ahmed Maher, a co-founder of the secular April 6 youth group, which engineered last year's anti-Mubarak uprising and which has thrown its backing behind Morsi, said that is group was watching how much the president keeps his promises "and we will hold him accountable later on when the time comes."

Though their role is still vague, but Maher believes the aides and the advisers can help Morsi reform state institutions and break away from old regime policies.

"They will be his eyes to carry reforms and institutional shake-ups," said Maher, who comes under criticism for siding by Morsi.

The list did not include three figures that Morsi sidelined in the past month and named as advisers ? the former military chief and defense minister, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, his deputy Gen. Sami Anan, and former Prime Minister Kamal el-Ganzouri. That could suggest that their advisory appointments were largely symbolic.

Apple awarded $1B in Samsung patent case

Lee Jae Won / Reuters

Apple's iPhone 4s, left, and Samsung's Galaxy S III.

?

By Gerry Shih, Reuters

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Apple scored a sweeping legal victory over Samsung Friday as a jury found the Korean company had copied critical features of the hugely popular iPhone and iPad and awarded the U.S. company $1.051 billion in damages.

The verdict -- which came much sooner than expected -- could lead to an outright ban on sales of key Samsung products and will likely solidify Apple's dominance of the exploding mobile computing market.

A number of companies that sell smartphones based on Google's Android operating system may now face further legal challenges from Apple, a company that is already among the largest and most profitable in business history.

Shares in Apple, which just this week became the biggest company ever by market value, climbed almost 2 percent to a record high of $675 in after-hours trade.

Brian Love, a Santa Clara law school professor, described it as a crushing victory for Apple: "This is the best-case scenario Apple could have hoped for."

The jury deliberated less than three days before delivering the verdict on seven Apple patent claims and five Samsung patent claims -- suggesting that the nine-person panel had little difficulty in concluding that Samsung had copied the iPhone and the iPad.

Billions of dollars in future sales hang in the balance.

Apple's charges that Samsung copied its designs and features are widely viewed as an attack on Google ?and its Android software, which drives Samsung's devices and has become the most-used mobile software.

Apple and Samsung, two companies that sell more than half the world's smartphones and tablets, have locked legal horns in several countries this year.

Earlier on Friday, a South Korean court found that both companies shared blame, ordering Samsung to stop selling 10 products including its Galaxy S II phone and banning Apple from selling four different products, including its iPhone 4.

But the trial on Apple's home turf -- the world's largest and most influential technology market -- is considered the most important.

The fight began last year when Apple sued Samsung in multiple countries, accusing the South Korean company of slavishly copying the iPhone and iPad. Samsung countersued. Apple had sought more than $2.5 billion in damages from Samsung, which has disputed that figure.

The companies are rivals, but also have a $5 billion-plus supply relationship. Apple is Samsung's biggest customer for microprocessors and other parts central to Apple's devices.

Near clean sweep
The jury spent most of August in a packed federal courtroom in San Jose -- just miles from Apple's headquarters in Cupertino -- listening to testimony, examining evidence and watching lawyers from both sides joust about seven Apple patents, five Samsung patents, and damage claims.

Jurors received 100 pages of legal instructions from U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh Tuesday prior to hearing the closing arguments from attorneys.

Lawyers from both tech giants used their 25 hours each of trial time to present internal emails, draw testimony from designers and experts, and put on product demonstrations and mockups to convince the jury.

At times, their questions drew testimony that offered glimpses behind the corporate facade, such as profit margins on the iPhone and Samsung's sales figures in the United States.

From the beginning, Apple's tactic was to present what it thought was chronological evidence of Samsung copying its phone.

Juxtaposing pictures of phones from both companies and internal Samsung emails that specifically analyzed the features of the iPhone, Apple's attorneys accused Samsung of taking shortcuts after realizing it could not keep up.

Samsung's attorneys, on the other hand, maintained Apple had no sole right to geometric designs such as rectangles with rounded corners. They called Apple's damage claim "ridiculous" and urged the jury to consider that a verdict in favor of Apple could stifle competition and reduce choices for consumers.

The trial produced its share of drama and heated moments. Lawyers routinely bickered over legal matters in the jury's absence, filed rafts of paperwork to thwart each other's courtroom strategy, and sometimes even resorted to public relations tactics to make their views known.

Below, CNBC's Jon Fortt?reports?from outside the courtroom following the jury's verdict. He discusses a likely Samsung appeal and notes "This is now full-on war."
