Union employees head back to court

NORTH ADAMS -- Two former North Berkshire School Union employees, who allegedly used the district?s store credit cards to make fraudulent purchases totaling more than $37,000, will be back in Northern Berkshire District Court on Friday, July 13, for a pretrial hearing as the case against them continues to move forward.

Donna M. Burdick, 57, of South County Road in Drury, and Carol A. Fryc, 71, of Arnold Place in North Adams, were each charged with a single count of larceny over $250 in May.

Fryc oversaw the school union?s accounts payable, payroll and vendor order forms, while Burdick served as its receptionist and grants manager. The women were terminated by the school district in August 2011.

It is alleged that from 2004 to 2011, the pair used the school union?s Walmart card to make $12,614 in unauthorized purchases, and from 2008 to 2011, they used the school union?s Staples credit card to make $24,488 in unauthorized purchases.

According to police reports filed by State Police Detective Matthew S. Boyer, the State Police Detective Unit alleged that the unauthorized purchases include gift cards, gas cards, cordless phones, mini-book computers, snacks, pet food and personal care items, among other merchandise.

Charges from the Walmart credit card were billed only to the district?s member towns of Florida and Monroe, while all

four shared the burden of the Staples card.

From 2008 to 2011, it is alleged that the women stole $21,988 from the member towns through unauthorized purchases. During that time, Clarksburg was responsible for $8,965 of the purchases, while Florida paid out $6,207. Savoy was responsible for $4,520 and Monroe for $2,295.
