HAMPTON ? Sara Pennfield wanted to give back to Exeter Hospital in a way that would involve the community and the ones she loved. What better place than her own yard?

Pennfield, owner of Salon Sara in North Hampton, is a well-known figure in the Hampton community and at Exeter Hospital. She is a former patient of the hospital and a recent survivor of breast cancer.

?Exeter Hospital has been phenomenal, and I have nothing but unconditional thanks for them,? Pennfield said.

Pennfield decided to hold a fund-raiser called the Silver Lining Event, inviting friends, family and others. She had live bands perform in her yard and trays of food donated by local restaurants.

Face painting, swimming and raffles were all activities for kids and adults. There were more than 20 raffles giving away concert tickets, circus tickets, cakes just to name a few things. She said there was a constant stream of 150 people at time for the span of six hours.

Attendees were asked to bring gift cards and donations to be given to cancer patients at Exeter Hospital. ?I wanted there to be gift cards for the little things in life and for them to choose what they need,? Pennfield said.

Approximately 230 cards were given at the event totaling $5,000 in cards and cash donations. ?I couldn?t have done it without the positive support and energy from the community and there are so many to thank,? Pennfield said.

She is considering doing the fund raiser again but wants to stress that anyone who wants donate should do so to My Breast Cancer Support, a nonprofit organization out of Portsmouth. The organization provides support and encouragement to Seacoast area breast cancer patients and their families by providing them with gift cards and anything else they may need, sometimes fulfilling last wishes.

Wendy McCoole, founder and executive director of My Breast Cancer Support, and Pennfield are new friends who met through Exeter Hospital. Pennfield was told about the organization while she was in treatment.

?Sara has such energy and she put a great event together? McCoole said.

The organization has upcoming events in August and September, including live music and a 5k road race. Visit www.mybreastcancersupport for more information.

Sara thanked sponsor Gallo Title and live bands, Berger, The Falcons and Midlife Crisis, as well as Fremont Pizzeria, Fast Eddie?s, Savory Square Bistro, Paul?s Carriage, Old Salt, Las Olas, Lena?s, Jumpin? Jacks Java, Coca Cola, Hannaford, 3 Sister?s Consignment, Tom?s Teen Sales, Verizon Wireless Arena, Timberland, Tri Rental, Bobbles and Lace, Quicksilver, Cosmoprof, Apple Hill Golf Club and W/A Wallpaper and Paint. She also praised neighbors Mike and Carolyn Barron, who helped host the event.
