Croton Schools Facilities Update ? Watch Croton

Due to a major backlog in voter-approved school capital projects filed with the New York State Education Department (SED), several facilities improvement projects originally scheduled to be undertaken and completed this summer must be put on hold.

?

In January, voters approved projects that were identified in the capital facilities preservation plan that was completed by KSQ Architects.???The reconfiguration and repaving of the bus loops at CHHS and CET and masonry improvements to the PVC stairway and retaining wall (cafeteria area), as well as other repaving, stone/brick repointing and drainage projects must be rescheduled for the summer of 2013.???The proposed projects for CET, PVC and CHHS require several weeks for completion and would pose a major disruption to instruction and building access if done during the regular school year.

?

Although the district filed work plans on time, as a result of an unforeseen high number of projects filed this spring, SED officials are addressing the most urgent health and safety projects first.????SED essentially changed from a three-day approval time frame to an eight-week time frame,? said Assistant Superintendent for Business Diane Chaissan, who noted that proceeding with school capital projects without SED approval could result in the loss of valuable state aid.

?

Routine maintenance of school buildings will still be conducted this summer as planned.???Fire alarm and emergency and site lighting upgrades also scheduled for this summer will be undertaken in the regular school year during off hours, once approved by SED.???The district will also consider addressing voter-approved restroom renovations at CET and PVC during regular school year off hours, once approved.
