An FBI investigation has discovered that companies owned by the Chinese government want to know more about the trade secrets of American companies.

Last year the Office of the US National Counterintelligence Executive wrote in a congressional report that the Chinese "are the world's most active and persistent perpetrators of economic espionage."

High-level Communist Party officials in China are suspected of being directly involved in the espionage.

The Department of Justice announced last week that there had been multiple participants in an operation to infiltrate the Du Pont company in the US. A former DuPont employee was involved.

Department officials alleged that the man had admitted that he provided trade secrets concerning DuPont's proprietary titanium dioxide manufacturing process to companies controlled by the government of the People's Republic of China.

While Chinese government officials have denied knowledge of the activities, US representatives have suggested the autocratic regime, which has strong involvement in the nation's industrial sector, would need to be aware of efforts to steal the US secrets.
