The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has today announced the recipients of its first ever Fellowships in Manufacturing.

The five-year fellowships, each worth around 1 million, have been awarded to Dr Geoffrey Nash, Dr Harish Bhaskaran, Dr Ajoy Velayudhan and Dr Peter Foote.

Professor David Delpy, CEO of EPSRC, said: "To meet the manufacturing challenges of tomorrow we need to transfer industry best practice to the academic world. Each recipient has a strong industry background and has the potential to become an international research leader, able to set and drive new research agendas, bring together multidisciplinary teams to solve real-world problems, and influence, inspire and motivate a wide sphere of stakeholders."

Minister for Universities and Science David Willetts said: "These new manufacturing fellowships will strengthen links between industry and the academic community and ensure that our leading companies have access to the very latest research. This will help us solve technological challenges and drive growth by keeping the UK ahead of the game in manufacturing."

  • Dr Geoffrey Nash will be based at the University of Exeter. The industrial partners are Procal, Qinetiq and Oclaro and his research is in the field of disruptive optoelectronic manufacture using graphene.
  • Dr Harish Bhaskaran will be based at the University of Exeter. The industrial partners are Asylum Research, IBM and iNets. His research area is in nanomanufacturing.
  • Dr Ajoy Velayudhan will be based at University College London. His industrial partner is GE and he will be working on modelling macromolecular manufacturing.
  • Dr Peter Foote will be based at Cranfield University, working with Meggitt, Smart Fibres Ltd and Rolls-Royce on sensors for through-life engineering.

Drs Ajoy Velayudhan and Peter Foote will be associated with EPSRC Centres for Innovative Manufacturing (one in emergent macromolecular therapies and the other in through-life engineering services).

The centres were set up to maximise the impact of innovative research for the UK. These not only support existing industries but crucially open up new industries and markets in growth areas.

###

EPSRC has announced it will run the Fellowships in Manufacturing for a second year. The call is now open, with a deadline of 5 September 2012 for applications. More information at http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/funding/calls/open/Pages/default.aspx

Link Exchange - Online Business Article Directory

?

By Charles Kiyimba

Link exchange is the act of exchanging links with other websites as a way of increasing traffic to your website and building your site?s popularity through creating inbound links. It?s when one site offers to link to the other in return for a reciprocal link. While link exchange used to be a biggest contributor to many websites? global popularity and a method through which websites could get higher rankings, nowadays it?s no longer recommendable to exchange links anyhow for various reasons.

The first major reason is that Google does not like it. Google detests links that are artificially built and prefers links built naturally through, for example, provision of quality content on your site. This takes time and that?s why many webmasters find exchanging links one of the easiest ways to build inbound links to their sites. The quickest link building methods are not the safest.

Take care! The second reason is that when you link to websites of poor quality, which are also not relevant to your niche, you devalue your website. Remember that you spend much of your time trying to build your site with quality content that pulls traffic to it. By so doing, you also build your popularity, believability and credibility. It?s therefore not wise to waste your effort by linking to a site that is not in line with the kind of business you are promoting.

That said, it?s important to know that building backlinks to your website is so important to the success of your online home business. Links pointing to your site help you to build your popularity. The more other websites link to you, the more search engines conclude that many people like your content and the more they find your website very resourceful. Remember that Google?s customers are people who search the internet other than webmasters. It?s by people searching that Google earns income. This means that websites that attract more people to search the internet stand higher chances of ranking high for their popularity. But effective links should be built naturally.

On the other side, you do not need to get scared. You can still exchange links with some other websites, provided you are mindful of the danger in it. I would therefore like to share with you some of the most important factors you need to consider when accepting or asking other websites to exchange links with you.

1. Quality of the link

As you exchange links with other websites, you should find out more on their quality. Quality links are those links from websites that rank high, sites with useful relevant content, sites with relevant links linking to them, sites that link to content related to your niche, sites with high traffic and sites that link to other top ranking sites. You do not need to get so many of them. One quality link from a big site is far better than many low quality links. Always avoid low quality links from small websites!

Alexa.com can give you a measurable standard on the traffic rank and links pointing to the site you intend to exchange links with. Relevance of the link

2. Relevance of the link refers to links that are related to your content and your niche.

For instance, if your area of specialization is article writing and you choose to link to a website that deals in cars, the two are actually unrelated. You risk being punished by Google for being manipulative by artificially creating links for the sake of getting a high rank. Avoid this kind of scenario when having a link exchange!

3. Status of the website with Google

To exchange a link with another website, it?s recommendable to first find out how it?s viewed by Google and other search engines. If a website is blacklisted by Google for any reason and you link to it, you will have wasted your time, energy and money invested in building your online home business. Google will wake up only to find your rank dropped to oblivion. Yes, it has happened to many online businesses, including big ones, and I wouldn?t like you to share the same adverse experience.

Before you exchange links with any websites, try to find out first whether the sites you intend to exchange links with are not blacklisted. You can do this by checking out the site on Google?s Domain Blacklist located at onlinealley.com/seotools/googlebannedchecker/ .

4. Number of links

Exchanging links with sites that have very few inbound links is of no benefit and value to you. These are majorly new sites that have not yet built trusted inbound links. They have not yet built their popularity with the search engines. Building your global link popularity is very vital to the success of your online home business. Always link to sites that have a reasonable number of quality and relevant inbound links.

5. Natural links

When you exchange a link with a website that has not created links naturally, you risk doing it the wrong way. Google values sites that have naturally built links overtime because such sites are found to be useful to the internet users from which Google earns a living. Remember that Google benefit from the activities of the searchers not webmasters.

As a tip, when exchanging links, exchange them with sites related to your niche. Secondly, do not hurry to have hundreds of links pointing to your site within a very short period of time. It will easily be noticeable that your links are not naturally built.

6. Quality of outbound links

Check to find out about the quality of outbound links of the websites you intend to link to. If the site links to other sites of low quality, it?s advisable not to link to it. This can lead you to trouble.

As I conclude, I would like to remind you that exchanging links is tricky and can lead to frustration if you do it the wrong way. Be cautious as you decide to link to other sites in order to avoid losing your business. Do you find this information useful to you?

Motel 6 being sold to private group for $1.9B

Accor says it has agreed to sell Motel 6 and another North American economy hotel brand to an affiliate of The Blackstone Group for $1.9 billion.

The French company says Motel 6 and Studio 6, an extended-stay economy chain, encompass 1,102 hotels in the U.S. and Canada.

Accor SA says the deal, expected to close in October, will give it the resources it needs to boost growth in the Asia Pacific region, Latin America and Europe.

The company will continue to own and operate luxury and upscale flagship hotels in the U.S. under the Sofitel and Novotel brands.

Blackstone says it plans to invest significantly in Motel 6's properties and speed the expansion of its franchise base. The private equity firm already owns Hilton Worldwide and other hotels.

Is Congress broken? Startup Act shows what can work.

The Startup Act is a modest piece of pro-business legislation unveiled Tuesday. It won't change the world, but that's why it may pass. In a partisan Congress, 'good' may be better than 'perfect.'?

By David Grant,?Staff writer / May 22, 2012

Mark Warner (D) of Virginia, and Kauffman Foundation vice president Bob Litan stand next to a job creation chart during a news conference unveiling Startup 2.0 legislation at the Capitol in Washington Tuesday.

Much of the time, Congress is, well, Congress. Gridlocked, combative, dysfunctional are only three of the adjectives that might be routinely applied.

But some days, like Tuesday, there is a hint of a different institution ? you might call it the Voltaire Congress, refusing to let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

That phrase, borrowed loosely from the 18th century French philosopher,?leads to legislation like the Startup 2.0 Act, unveiled Tuesday.

The bill is not perfect. It does not deal with America's most pressing legislative issues, such as the looming budget "sequester" or the expiration of the Bush tax cuts, nor is it a magic bullet for the American economy. But the act has sponsors on both sides of the aisle who say it is attempting something good ? making life easier for startup businesses by easing immigration rules for highly skilled workers, paring back some regulations, and changing taxes.

"What I would encourage is that we not take the attitude or the approach that unless we do everything, we don't do anything," Sen. Jerry Moran (R) of Kansas, one of the bill's sponsors, told reporters at a press conference.

The goal of the Startup Act is not to resuscitate the economy in one fell swoop. But rather to water the green shoots of future economic growth, sponsors say.

"You can't cut and tax your way alone out of this challenge around the debt if you don't have the third leg of the stool, which is growing the economy," Sen. Mark Warner (D) of Virginia, an other sponsor, told reporters.

The legislation provides a window into how Congress can sometimes take the grand issues that are vexing it ? from immigration to tax reform ? and attenuate them into a more palatable and passable form.

The Startup 2.0 Act builds on the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act, which also eased regulations on a number of small businesses. That legislation rocketed through the House of Representatives but faced spirited opposition from a handful of Democratic senators who said it weakened investor protections. However, the bill's momentum ? and President Obama's endorsement of the measure ? prevailed. Mr. Obama signed it into law in April.

The JOBS Act "was hotly debated on the [Senate] floor, but with presidential leadership and with active sponsorship of the leadership of the House and Senate, we were able to move forward some genuinely good ideas about capital access,"?said Sen. Chris Coons (D) of Delaware, one of the Startup Act's sponsors.?

He argued that the Startup Act could follow a similar path, despite some concern about the immigration reforms. "Even in the midst of a hotly contested presidential election we can find some consensus that moves pieces of immigration reform forward," he said. "Obviously not all of [immigration reform] but important pieces so that we don't miss another year or two or three in the global competition for talent."
