Cirque du Soleil artist dies after fall in Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? A Paris-born performer in Cirque du Soleil's "Ka" died after a fall during a show in Las Vegas.

Sarah Guyard-Guillot was pronounced dead late Saturday night at a hospital after falling about 50 feet from the show's stage.

Witnesses told the Las Vegas Sun (http://bit.ly/14H3Te0 ) that the accident occurred near the end of the production Saturday night at the MGM Grand.

Visitor Dan Mosqueda of Colorado Springs, Colo., said the 31-year-old acrobatic performer was being hoisted up the side of the stage when it appeared that she slipped free of her safety wire and plummeted to an open pit below the stage.

"Initially, a lot of people in the audience thought it was part of the (show)," he told the Sun. "But you could hear screaming, then groaning, and we could hear a female artist crying from the stage."

The show momentarily continued, then stopped. Minutes after the accident, a recorded announcement informed audience members that refunds or vouchers to future shows would be offered, and the crowd was dismissed.

Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte issued a statement Sunday praising Guyard-Guillot and saying performances of "Ka" have been canceled until further notice.

Guyard-Guillot, a mother of two children, had been with the original cast of "Ka" since 2006, and had been an acrobatic performer for over 20 years.

"I am heartbroken. I wish to extend my sincerest sympathies to the family. We are all completely devastated," Laliberte said. "We are reminded with great humility and respect how extraordinary our artists are each and every night. Our focus now is to support each other as a family."

Cirque officials are working with authorities investigating the accident and have offered their full cooperation, he added.

The Clark County Coroner's Office will rule on the cause of death.

The MGM Grand also issued a statement concerning the accident.

"Our company is deeply saddened by the loss of one of the talented KA artists Saturday night," it reads. "The thoughts and prayers of our employees are with the performer's family, the cast of KA, and the entire Cirque family during this difficult time."

The accident occurred while Cirque's top executives, including president Daniel Lamarre, were in Las Vegas to celebrate the premiere of "Michael Jackson One" at Mandalay Bay.

On Wednesday night, a performer in a preview performance of that show suffered a mild concussion after missing the protective pad below an act and landing on the stage. That artist is expected to return to the show.

NBA free agency: Paul, Rivers in tow, big roster decisions ahead of Clippers

It was a torturous path, but the Clippers seem to have gotten themselves right where they hoped to be as NBA free agency gets underway. They have the guy who some consider to be the best coach in the NBA?Doc Rivers?and gave up only a draft pick to get him. And they?re poised to remove any shred of anxiety about the future of point guard Chris Paul, who has let it be known he intends to re-sign with LA.

That?s the good news. The bad news is that the rest of the roster is very much in flux, and Rivers?carrying his new front-office title?now must figure out how to fill in the right mix of players around Paul.

MORE: Paul to stay with Clippers | Celtics trade Garnett, Pierce | Howard to meet with teams

The two big decisions that Rivers has to make, of course, is what to do with center DeAndre Jordan, who was nearly sent to Boston for Kevin Garnett, and backup point guard Eric Bledsoe. The Clippers fielded a number of offers for Bledsoe at the draft, but league sources said the Clippers did not want to trade him until they see how the rest of the roster shapes up.

Jordan has drawn plenty of interest, most notably from Portland, where the general manager who drafted Jordan for the Clippers?Neil Olshey?is now running the show. But Rivers knows he has got to be careful when it comes to Jordan. He is only 25, and having his name being put through the trade wringer is not going to be helpful for his already delicate psyche. The ship sailed on getting Garnett to LA, obviously, and keeping Jordan might, in the end, be the solution at center.

If that?s the case, Rivers is going to need Jordan to buy in 100 percent. Sources around the Clippers last year told Sporting News that Jordan, despite his deficiencies, actually put in the most work of his career last season, attempting to develop a hook shot as he learned to play with his back to the basket. But Jordan lacks confidence in his interior game because of his 38.6 percent free-throw shooting.

?If the right (assistant) coaches get him and build him up, he is going to have a breakthrough,? one source said. ?But starting it all off with trade rumors is not going to help him between the ears.?

Still, with Jordan?s free-throw shooting weighing on the team, the Clippers will need a good backup big man. They?re likely to keep free-agent Ryan Hollins, who played with Rivers in Boston, but will look for an upgrade behind Jordan. The Clippers are rumored to have interest in Marreese Speights, but he is likely out of their price range. More likely is that they will pursue a veteran, and former Clippers Elton Brand and Chris Wilcox would be up on that list.

ESPN.com reported that the Clippers have been offered Toronto big man Andrea Bargnani for Caron Butler. There have been ongoing talks between the teams about swapping Bledsoe for DeMar DeRozan, but the Clippers are reluctant to take on DeRozan?s newly signed four-year, $40 million contract.

The big issue is what to do about the two starting wing spots. In addition to DeRozan, the Clippers have had talks?before Rivers arrived?with the Magic about swapping Bledsoe for guard Arron Afflalo, who is a top-notch defender and averaged 16.5 points. Orlando selected shooting guard Victor Oladipo with the No. 2 pick in the draft, meaning Afflalo is likely on his way out.

The Clippers? focus on the shooting guard spot, and their willingness to dump Butler, leaves small forward wide open. Matt Barnes is a free agent and played well?on a minimum contract?for the Clippers last year. Ideally, the team would re-sign him and put him in the starting five, but Barnes will have more options this summer and could price himself out of the Clippers? range.

If Barnes leaves, there will be a rather gaping hole in the roster for the Clippers. There had been the hope that the Celtics would buy out Paul Pierce, and that he would head West to join Rivers, but that, too, has now been scotched.

The Clippers have tradable assets with Bledsoe and Jordan. However, they also have multiple holes to fill. Paul and Rivers are in place, but the work is just beginning.

(AP) ? New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez is set to play his first minor league game on a rehabilitation assignment.

The Yankees said Monday that Rodriguez is scheduled to start Tuesday night for Single-A Charleston in the South Atlantic League. Rodriguez is supposed to play at least three innings against Rome during the game in South Carolina.

Rodriguez has been working out at the Yankees' spring training complex in Florida this year while recovering from surgery on his left hip on Jan. 16. The three-time AL MVP turns 38 later this month.

Rodriguez has 647 career home runs. The Yankees have struggled this season while Rodriguez and several other stars have been on the disabled list.

Four Vanderbilt University football players have been dismissed from the team during an investigation of alleged sex crimes at a university dormitory. This follows other recent instances of sex crimes tied to football players.

A statement on the school?s web site says only that the four were dismissed from the team and suspended ?for violation of team rules.?

?The well-being of our students is of paramount concern to us, and we will not tolerate any actions that threaten student safety and security,? Beth Fortune, Vanderbilt vice chancellor for public affairs, said in a statement Saturday.

In its brief statement, the school noted that ?Vanderbilt first reported the matter that led to the dismissals to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department and is fully cooperating with the Metro Police investigation.?

?They may not return to campus for any purpose without explicit permission from the Office of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity,? according to the statement.

The Tennessean?newspaper in Nashville reported Saturday that ?Metro police and Vanderbilt?s administration were keeping a tight lid on details of the incident and no arrests had been made as of Friday night.?

?I can confirm that the Metropolitan Police Department?s Sex Crimes Unit began an investigation on Wednesday in regard to a matter that was alleged to have occurred at a Vanderbilt University dormitory,? Don Aaron, spokesman for Metro police, told The Tennessean. ?Our sex crimes detectives became involved as the result of a notification to us on Wednesday from Vanderbilt University police. The investigation remains very much in progress.?

Named for shipping?and?rail?magnate?"Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt,?the private university in Nashville has about 12,000 students.

?Under head coach James Franklin, the Commodores enjoyed one of their most successful seasons in recent history in 2012,? writes columnist Tyler Conway on the ?Bleacher Report? sports web site. ?In his second season, the 41-year-old Franklin led a renaissance in a program that has historically struggled. After starting the campaign off 2-4, the Commodores reeled off seven consecutive wins?. Vanderbilt defeated North Carolina State 38-24 in the?Music City Bowl?to cap off the late-season run, just their third bowl win in school history.?

?Franklin returns next season with expectations high for a repeat performance,? writes Conway. ?While there is still plenty to be investigated in this matter, the Commodores will certainly feel the blow of losing four players should the suspensions last into the 2013 season.? So far, Coach Franklin has not commented on the matter.

The news from Vanderbilt follows several other recent instances of football players charged with sexual misconduct.

The US Naval Academy last week charged three Navy football players with sexually assaulting a female midshipman at an off-campus house last year. The academy said in a news release that the male midshipmen are being charged with rape, sexual assault or other sexual misconduct, and making a false official statement.

?We teach our guys more than blocking and tackling, trying to do what?s right,? Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said this week, as reported by the Washington Post. ?All we want is the truth to come out. We believe in the judicial system. We believe in our country and its judicial system. Our main concern is that the truth comes out, and whatever it is, that justice is served.?

Meanwhile, the Associated Press reports, two Connecticut high school football players have been charged in sexual assault cases that, like a recent high-profile Ohio rape case, have led to online taunts directed at an accuser.

The two 18-year-old Torrington High School players were charged with felony second-degree sexual assault and other crimes last month in cases involving different 13-year-old girls.

In the Ohio case, two Steubenville High School football players were sentenced to at least a year in juvenile jail after being found guilty of assaulting a drunken 16-year-old girl. The case bitterly divided the city and led to accusations of a cover-up to protect the athletes.
