'Grey's' Chyler Leigh speaks about Lexie's death

Karen Neal / ABC

Chyler Leigh's Lexie died with Mark (Eric Dane) by her side on the season finale of "Grey's Anatomy."

By Jenna Mullins, E! Online

Everyone has seen the "Grey's Anatomy"?finale, right? Good. Because Chyler Leigh (finally) has something to say about Lexie's tragic death.?

Since the finale aired last month, Leigh has remained mum on her character's exit from "Grey's," so our only closure was what executive producer Shonda Rhimes?told us about the deaths.?

More from E!: The mob doctor

Until today! Leigh has broken her silence with a statement issued to E! News, and here is what she has to say:?

"Earlier this year, I made the decision that season eight would be my last on 'Grey's Anatomy.' I met with Shonda and we worked together to give Lexie's story appropriate closure. I am very lucky to have worked with this amazing cast and crew for five seasons. My experience on 'Grey's Anatomy' is something that I will treasure for the rest of my life. I want to take this time to say thank you to the fans. Your unconditional love and support have made these last five years very special for me. I look forward to my next chapter and I hope you will continue to follow me on my journey."?

After the finale aired and the screen faded to black, Shonda took to?Twitter?to confirm that both Lexie and Teddy would not be returning next season.

"This finale was incredibly hard to write. I did not enjoy it. It made me sick and it made me sad. We end the season not knowing ANYTHING about the future. Except for two things. We know we are definitely saying goodbye to two of my favorite people: Chyler Leigh (Lexie) and Kim Raver (Teddy)."?

More from E!: "Game of Thrones" finale preview?

She continued:?

"I love Chyler and I love the character of Lexie Grey. She was an important member of my 'Grey's' family. This was not an easy decision. But it was a decision that Chyler and I came to together. We had a lot of thoughtful discussion about it and ultimately we both decided this was the right time for her character's journey to end. As far as I'm concerned Chyler will always remain a part of the Shondaland family and I can't wait to work with her again in the future."?

Feel better, Lexie fans? Or will no kind words from Chyler close the wounds caused by her heartwrenching death in the finale??

TODAY Health - Diet, Fitness and Wellness Blog | TODAY.com ...

By Bill Briggs and Lisa Flam

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg stood firmly by his plan for a?first-in-the-nation ban on large servings of soda and sugary drinks to fight obesity?on Friday???even as the city celebrated National Doughnut Day.

?It doesn?t sound ridiculous,? the mayor told TODAY?s Matt Lauer. ?In moderation, most things are OK.?

Bloomberg?s proposal would prohibit the sale of soda and other sweetened drinks in containers larger than 16 ounces that are sold in restaurants, movies theaters, at food carts and ball parks.

While some called the plan a governmental overreach, others applauded the effort to combat obesity. Bloomberg said nobody would be deprived of the right to drink soda.

Vote: Will a ban on big sizes of sugary drinks curb obesity?

?We?re not banning you from getting the stuff,? he said on TODAY. ?It?s just if you want 32 ounces, the restaurant has to serve it in two glasses. That?s not exactly taking away your freedoms. It?s not something the Founding Fathers fought for.

?And all the studies show if the glass or the plate in front of you is smaller, you?ll eat less,? the mayor said.

EPA/JUSTIN LANE

A woman holds a large soda on a street in New York City. Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced plans to implement a ban on the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters and street carts. The law is another effort by the administration to fight obesity.

Around the city,?reaction has ranged from sweet celebration to frothy anger. In the backwash of Bloomberg?s other municipal health crackdowns ? namely public-smoking suppressions and calorie count postings at chain restaurants ? some New Yorkers and even some obesity fighters say the mayor?s anti-soda push exceeds what city governments are designed to do.

?I consider myself to be fit and healthy, and I love large sodas!? said Christopher Potter, 48, a mortgage broker who lives and works in New York.?His favorite is regular Pepsi and he downs at least one 16-ounce soda per day.

?I go to the gym daily (and) run. I?m not fat. I think this proposed ban is a huge infringement on my rights. I always get the large soda at the movies and drink what I like," Potter said.?

Health experts largely praised the move to stop sales of sugared drinks served in containers of more than 16 fluid ounces.?

"I?actually support the ban," said Joy Bauer, registered dietitian and health expert for NBC's TODAY. "It?s a good compromise because the law wouldn?t completely take away these sugary drinks, but it limits portions and forces people to think twice before drinking more ? by buying a second beverage."

Her support was echoed by New Yorker Alicia Gay, who works near the city's financial district:?

"When I heard the news, I felt like Etta James ? 'At Last,'" said Gay, 32. "People have long applauded the mayor's decision to ban smoking in public. And, as a former smoker, I kept thinking: Why is smoking the only costly, life-threatening behavior being punished when obesity represents a health epidemic in this country? It's crazy that parents can buy their kids these drinks with hundreds of calories with zero regard for the health implications and the potential impact that can have."

On TODAY, Bloomberg said New York City has reduced the rate of childhood obesity by about 5 percent in recent years, and the city?s life expectancy is three years greater than the national average.

The supersize soda ban, he said, would also improve people?s lives.

?In the case of full-sugared drinks, in moderation it?s fine, and all we?re trying to do is to explain to people that if you drink a little bit less you will live longer,? Bloomberg said.

In a TODAY.com?poll that got more than 25,000 responses, the vast majority said Bloomberg?s ban would not curb obesity.

?When told the results, Bloomberg, who previously moved to ban smoking in New York City restaurants, parks and beaches, said such skepticism sounded familiar.

?Where did I hear this before?? Bloomberg said. ?Wasn?t it [that] smoking wasn?t going to work? Today it?s one of the best things we?ve ever done. Deaths from smoking dramatically coming down across the country, virtually every major city has adopted the smoking ordinances.?

While Bloomberg's plan "has been drawing a lot of snickering and quite a bit of anger," University of Pennsylvania's bioethicist Art Caplan says the NYC mayor has science on his side.

"Studies show that portion size is a big contributor to the obesity epidemic overwhelming America," says msnbc.com contributor Caplan, Ph.D., who cheers?Bloomberg's effort to draw attention to?the causes of obesity.??"That said, the effort to get people not to drink soda in bucket size containers is more symbolic then anything else."

The soda proposal, which is likely to win approval from the city?s Board of Health, could take effect in March. It would not apply to water, diet soda, coffee drinks, dairy-based beverages like milk or milkshakes, fruit and vegetable juice and alcoholic beverages. Grocery and convenience stores would be exempt.?Violators would face $200 fines.

Two years ago, Harvard scientists found that taxing soda, albeit in a different way, does cut consumption.?When researchers placed a temporary, penny-per-ounce tax on soft drinks sold at Harvard?s Brigham and Women?s Hospital in Boston, sales fell by 26 percent.

Via his own website, however, Bloomberg cited separate studies that ?have shown what common sense already tells us: When larger portions are in front of people, they simply consume more, often without recognizing it.? In one study, he said, people who were were given sugary drink portion sizes 50 percent larger drank 20 percent to 33 percent more, without reducing their food intake.

Not everyone's a fan. "Bans are an unfair as they treat everyone the same with a 'one-size-fits-all approach,'" said Hank Cardello, a former Coca-Cola executive. Today, he heads the obesity solutions initiative?at the?Hudson Institute, nonpartisan,??Washington, D.C., policy research organization that says it promotes global security, prosperity and freedom. ?

Cardello cited research by the Hudson Institute that shows 25 percent to 30 percent of American consumers pursue healthy lifestyles. "Bluntly,?bans are unfair to them as they act responsibly and do not?contribute to the $150 billion annual cost of obesity," he said.

"What?s needed now is an incentive for food and beverage companies to more aggressively lower the number of calories they sell," Cardello added. "Given the trillions of beverage calories sold each year, an incentive for lowering a company?s 'calorie footprint' by 2 to 3 percent would go a long way to pulling excess calories off the streets. This can be achieved by providing an extra 10 percent?tax deduction to those companies achieving this goal."?

Bioethicist Caplan's?concern is the focus on portion sizes suggests the solution to obesity comes down to simple choice.?"It doesn't and it is going to take a real serious effort to shift a society that is addicted to fattening foods at the dinner table and on the farm to lose weight."

Updated: On Friday afternoon,?a Coca-Cola Co. spokesperson responded to Bloomberg's proposal: ?The people of New York City are much smarter than the New York City Health Department believes. We are transparent with our consumers,"?the statement read.?"They can see exactly how many calories are in every beverage we serve. We have prominently placed calorie counts on the front of our bottles and cans and in New York City, restaurants already post the calorie content of all their offerings and portion sizes -- including soft drinks."

Original: The potential soda crackdown is encouraging to groups that have long lobbied against the soda scourge. The American Heart Association, for instance, urges Americans to sip no more than 450 calories of sugar-sweetened beverages -- or fewer than three 12-ounce cans of carbonated soda -- per week.?

But like residents of the Big Apple, even the AHA needs more details, said Julie Del Barto, a spokeswoman for the group.?

"The American Heart Association is very concerned with the rising rates of obesity," she said in a statement. "We look forward to reviewing Mayor Bloomberg's specific proposal, which we understand won't be available until the June 12th hearing."

Our Standard Fuels Will Soon Be Gone And We Will Have No ...

Oftentimes, when talking about alternative energy resources, it is not a good idea to consider it in isolated terms.

At the rate we?re currently using our fossil fuels scientists say that with in as little as 40 years we are going to no longer have any more standard fuels to burn. As we continue to use non-renewable fuels daily and because this isn?t a thing that renews itself, in a very short amount of time we are going to have no non-renewable fuels left. Although this might not be something which happens in our lifetime it?s very feasible that it is a thing that will happen in our children?s lifetime. The consumption of fossil fuels is certainly something we need to cut back on starting now, to ensure our future and also the health of our world.

Just so you know the type of impact this can end up having on the entire planet, once our non-renewable fuels are used up, gas powered machinery and heating oil will no longer be an choice. This is needless to say going to mean that individuals are going to need to start to look for alternative energy sources for these items inside the next 30 years. And if we?re truly going to be out of oil in 40 years, it?s actually really important that we start using more of these alternative resources right now. If we could get men and women to begin utilizing these alternative energy sources right now as opposed to relying on oil, there?s the chance that we will need so little oil we may never run out.

I trust what you will have learned thus far related to alternative energy resources, and likewise also the information?? regarding green living, is going to be helpful to you personally. Please continue reading?? a bit more for added insights about this subject.

One of the options people have instead of using our standard fuels is to use the power of the sun in order to produce energy. One of the ways that we can actually use the sun to heat our homes is by storing the sun?s energy in batteries and then using those batteries to power electric heaters in order to keep our houses warm. One more thing I ought to point out is that using this kind of energy to heat your house is in fact free once you get past the initial setup costs. Electric vehicles can also be charged up using this technology, meaning your house power bill will not go up when you?re charging these vehicles.

You need to take into account that the sun isn?t the only kind of alternative energy that we can draw from, as we can also use the wind and water. Although at this time it?s still easier to harness the energy from the sun these other options are still available and in time will be just as simple to use.

The truth is, that if we continue burning our non-renewable fuels at the rate we?re doing right now in 40 or 50 years they are going to be used up, and these are not renewable. So for anyone who has the presence of mind, I would strongly suggest you begin considering these alternative energy sources right now in order to secure your future and the future of your children.

Romney calls May jobs report 'devastating news'

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney talks about today's bleak jobs report, repealing Obamacare and his role in private equity.

By Jeff Cox, cnbc.com

President Obama's failed policies?not the European debt crisis?are to blame for the struggling U.S. economy, presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney told CNBC.

Speaking hours after the Bureau of Labor Statistics said the unemployment rate rose to 8.2 percent and the economy created just 69,000 jobs in May, Romney said the president has run out of excuses for the weak performance.

"This is very bad news for the American people, and the president is always quick to find someone to blame," Romney said in a live interview on CNBC's "Fast Money Halftime Report" show. "First it was George Bush, then Congress, ATM machines, then it was Europe. The truth is it's the job of the president to get people back to work."

Stocks sold off violently after the jobs report and have been on a downward trajectory in part because of investor fears that sovereign debt defaults in Greece could spread through the euro zone and infect the global economy.

CNBC: Jobs Report Signals More Trouble for Housing

While acknowledging that the European situation is difficult, he said the problem has been exacerbated because Obama has not been focused on growing the U.S. economy.

?"The developments around the world always influence our jobs. But we should be well into a very robust recovery by now," Romney said. "If the president's policies had worked, if he'd been able to get America back on track, we'd be looking at what happened in Europe as a problem but not devastating. These numbers are devastating."

If elected, Romney said he would focus on creating more jobs in the energy field by broadening the nation's exploration efforts. He also said he'd scrap the Affordable Care Act ? often called "Obamacare" ? which he said has created an air of uncertainty that also has stymied job growth.

John Schoen: Recession stormclouds menace world economy

He also rejected the notion that the Federal Reserve ought to consider another round of quantitative easing, a bond-buying program the central bank conducted over the past three years to lower interest rates and boost risk assets.

"The Fed stimulative effects have really run their course. QE2 was not able to yield the economic benefits which they hoped it would be able to yield," Romney said. "I don't think we're looking for more QE3 if you will. I don't think that will have any more impact than QE2 did."

CNBC: America's 'Nanny State' Laws

The Obama administration called on Congress to do more to help the economy create jobs, with Labor Secretary Hilda Solis saying May's rise in the unemployment rate was unacceptable.

"Congress has to take some action because while we see the unemployment rate where it is, it's not acceptable," Solis told CNBC earlier Friday.

CNBC: Even Wealthy Americans Are Worried About Jobs

At a subsequent speech in Golden Valley, Minn., Obama acknowledged the jobs weakness, saying "We're still not creating them as fast as we want."

But also said his administration's efforts indeed have been hampered by events around the world and an uncooperative Congress.

CNBC: Jobs Employers Can't Fill

"I sent Congress a bill last September full of the kind of bipartisan ideas that would have put our fellow Americans back to work and help reinforce our economy against some of these outside shots," he said. "Congress has passed a few parts of the jobs bill...but Congress has not acted on enough of the other ideas in that bill that would help make a difference and help create jobs right now, and there's no excuse for it."

Reuters contributed to this report.??

Porn actor wanted over body parts in Canada mail

Montreal Police via EPA

Luka Rocco Magnotta is wanted by police in connection with a murder in Montreal, Canada which involved the discovery of part of a body in Montreal but other parts of the body mailed to political party offices in Ottawa, Canada.

By Alastair Jamieson, msnbc.com

A bisexual porn actor and stripper is being hunted over the killing of a man in Canada and the mailing of his body parts to different places including the headquarters of the country?s Conservative Party, police said.

Luka Rocco Magnotta, 29, is wanted for homicide, Montreal police said late Wednesday at a news conference ? amid reports a video of the killing had been posted on a website specializing in ?gore?.

Reports on Thursday said Magnotta has previously been accused of torturing kittens and having a relationship with notorious Canadian sex killer Karla Homolka?- although he strongly denied both.

Police on Thursday said he is believed to have fled North America.

Magnotta, believed to originally be from Toronto, was renting an apartment in a working-class Montreal neighborhood. It was behind that building that police found a man's torso in a suitcase in a heap of garbage Tuesday, police said. That same day, a foot was found in a package mailed to the Conservative party headquarters in Ottawa, and a hand found at postal warehouse in the Canadian capital. The package with the hand was addressed to the Liberal Party of Canada. Early testing shows the three body parts come from the same man, police said.

Police in masks combed through the blood-soaked Montreal studio apartment on Wednesday. A blood stained mattress remained there after they left.

"For most of the officers that were there all night long this is the kind of crime scene they've never seen in their career," Montreal Police Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere said.

The National Post newspaper reported that a 10-minute video posted on a website on May 25 appears to show Magnotta?murdering, beheading and dismembering a young Asian man in an apartment. Police sources said the video ? which is part of the ongoing investigation ? appears to be authentic.

Magnotta?s own website contains rambling denials of internet rumors.?The Star reported that Magnotta became the subject of a highly organized social media campaign in 2010 after he allegedly killed two kittens and posted a video of their deaths online.

The video, posted on YouTube and later taken down, showed a man torturing and killing two kittens after putting them in a plastic bag and using a vacuum to suffocate them.

Frank Gunn/AP

Canadian sex killer Karla Homolka, pictured in 1993.

The video sparked widespread outrage and prompted a massive online manhunt. The next day, a Facebook group devoted to determining the killer was formed.

Police said Magnotta is also known by the names Eric Clinton Newman and Vladimir Romanov. They described him as white, 5 feet 8 inches tall (1.78 meters) with blue eyes and black hair.

Police discovered the severed foot after Jenni Bryne, a top political adviser to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, opened a bloodstained box at Conservative party headquarters Tuesday.

When Bryne opened the box, a foul odor overcame the office.

"It was such a horrible odor. I'm sure many of us will not forget it," Conservative Party spokesman Fred DeLorey said.

Police said the package was addressed to the Conservative Party of Canada and not to a specific person.

Canada Post wouldn't comment on the discoveries.

Eric Schorer, the manager of the building where the suspect lived, said Magnotta had been living there for about four months but hadn't been seen around in a while. He said there were never any complaints about noise in the unit, and that Magnotta passed a credit test to rent there.

"He seemed like a nice guy," Schorer said.

Richard Payette, who lived across the hall from Magnotta, said the door of Apartment 208 was left open for part of the day on Wednesday. Payette said there was an overwhelming smell drifting out into the hallway, like bad meat.

?"It's very upsetting," Opposition New Democrat member Yvon Godin said. "It could be just one crazy person that did it, but at the same time we have lots of people unhappy in our country, the way the country is going."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
